Needing to send in your pcm to get an aftermarket tune is ridiculous... everyone and their brother offers them preloaded on the little handheld jobs for the new rangers... why such a different procedure with the broncos?

2.3L engine? Are you required to use premium fuel after the tune?
For the Ford Performance tune - yes. In a pinch, You can run non-premium, but it will derate the engine and isn't recommended (can always revert back to stock using the dongle again if you want to for more than just a single fillup). You are requiring the engine to detect knock in the first place and then derate to prevent it, which is ... less than good, but it won't leave you stranded.

Many of the other tunes will come with different tunings based on the rating of gasoline you use - like racing octane, or some percentage ethanol, or what not. You just hit the button on the tune according to what you just filled up with.

If you want more performance (safely, without pinging and causing damage), no matter which tune you are going to have to run better gas though.

While on Fords FDRS the other day, I did some looking around. there's ZERO evidence ANYWHERE that there is a tune installed. in fact I suspect the average ford tech has NO way to tell if there is a tune installed. Most of the worry wart Karens have absolutely NO data to back some story ( or theory) about a warrantee company digging deep into a cars computer, just to find a tune , for the sole purpose of denying a claim. I'd love to read the story.

There are no red flags, no toggle switch to check for tune, no drop down menu with tune checker icon...NOTHING!

To do this, the tech would need to download and compare the PMI and configuration, and then check it against the MANY MANY other stock OEM strategies and configurations....just to find irregularities . but then would still have to prove they were detrimental in some way.

On the other hand, some fools have shown up for service, with there piggyback tuner still hooked up, right in plain sight. of course, then the tech can and will research the modification, IF there is warranty work that is DIRECTLY related to the tuner.
Unless they’ve changed something what’s affected and they look for for red flags is the flash counter within the ecm I’ve been tuning diesels for almost 20 years and that was the thing that would get ya now if FDRS can’t see the flash counter then I don’t know that I’m completely unfamiliar with FDRS

Flash counters are visible on the new rangers at least

I used to go in for service in my
2012 VW GLI with a APR ECU flashed tune and I’d tell them it was tuned and the techs were nothing but cool with it. Depends on the dealer for sure.

The Broncos PCM/ECU was hacked last summer, now there are several tuning companies that offer new software uploaded onto the OEM PCM, however you still need to send in your original PCM and get the replacement.
Hmmmm... please share what companies that have completed the hack.

Would like to know... my last update is January into spring.

Because of OTA updates. Vehicles are a lot more secure now. The Rangers won’t have that until the new redesign.

Did you ever go in needing warranty work though?

Dealers usually don't give 2 shits what you do to your vehicle until you hit them up for warranty work..

I did, but it wasn’t for engine stuff. So guess never knew.

what do know was, when I traded it in, you mash things in 3rd and the clutch would slip. 😂😂. Good luck warranty work new owner 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, those are piggyback modules. Good stuff.

I'm waiting for more power.

For what it is worth, I have the JB4 tune on my 2.7L. I really like the app integration and the different power levels based on the fuel being used. With 93 octane, the power increase is substantial.

Really ? I thought they were flash devices, how are they offering custom tuning and trans tuning then? If they are just inline foolers then that’s junk

Trading things at JUST the right time is always appreciated lol.

When I traded in my Ranger.. banks weren't open so I needed to take the truck home until monday..

Saturday afternoon, immideately after leaving the dealer I was trading it to... started hearing all sorts of front end clunking 😝 dunno what was making the noise.. 40k on it.. balljoints.. shocks... who knows..not my problem anymore!
