Manual transmission scraping noise / grinding sound

Yes, they thought it could be risking further damage to other internal trans parts, not so much a safety issue per say.

Mine has the exact same noise, especially on cold starts. I dropped mine off Monday night so it would be ready for a cold start on Tuesday. The Ford dealer had their transmission guy listen to it. I explained the exact issue prior to all of this. The result was no noise observed. Shifts fine, runs fine etc (which is true). As much as I want to press them on the issue, I have a warranty (and extended) and I'll just keep driving it and observing. Bigger fish to fry in my life.

BTW this is a typical dealer response in my experience. I brought in my 2003 Nissan 350Z for transmission noise and uneven tire wear at least 5 times. Nothing observed by the dealer. Turns out the transmission was bad and the tire wear was from a design defect. I sued Nissan and they bought the car back. The dealer did not notice either issue after 5+ times there. Sigh...

Same reply I got the first time I dropped mine off at the dealer...could not replicate the issue. Brought it back again a month later and pressed them a little bit and thats when they got Ford involved and had the transmission replaced. BTW I had a 2003 350z as well.

Hey Kurt, glad that worked out for you! So where are they going to do the work? At your dealer or at Fette down here. I will say at least Steve at Fette knows his stuff and glad they are doing the right thing. Makes me feel better bringing the car in for service! Ive got at 2k with the new transmission and no issues or that dreaded noise.

Mine does that too 8500mi. I've been trying to read through this. Do we know a root cause?

It has to do with the sixth gear, not sure what about the 6th gear, but the noise goes away when you pull the gear lever down towards the 6th gear.

At Fette, just waiting for Steve to tell me when the Trans comes in. I can’t thank you enough for your helps. The tech that worked on yours has been there since he was 18, I think he is in his 40s now. I asked how they found it and he said there were 3 guys all over it, listening with stethoscopes, etc. Steve said he yelled for joy when he figured it out. I wish my local dealer had actual old school diagnostic ability. I was actually amazed at the lack of initiative they showed. My selling dealer is Ciocca Ford in Souderton, PA. I am not going to return to them for any work.

Thats great to hear! Not that you have an issue of course but that Steve was able to diagnose it as well. For me its great to hear that I have Steve about a mile away should I have anymore issues. Glad it worked out and shows the benefit of people posting on this forum.

Same boat here. Dealer says 4+ weeks for appointment with their transmission guy, looks like 7 possible weeks for new transmission after that. I called Ford customer service and they won’t assign a case manager until I get into a dealer. Dealer also said I’m 20-30 in line on their loaner car list, but they’d reimburse $30 or so for an enterprise rental per day. I’m going to call other dealers tomorrow to see if I can get in sooner, but super disappointed. I’m pulling up to lights with a bronco that sounds like a struggling Keureg, it’s embarrassing. Even worse with summer coming and maybe missing 2 months with my new vehicle.

I have noise on cold starts, pushing in clutch and pushing against 6th stops the noise (noted in another thread by a dealer technician).. otherwise it seems to drive normal. After 20 minutes of driving, the noise goes away and I can’t replicate it.

I’m also noticing some rev lag between gears when driving, but I’m unsure if that’s normal in the Bronco or if I’m being over critical/discouraged now.

This is the first time I’ve had issues like this in a new vehicle and it’s crazy how ford and the dealer seem okay blaming it on supply chain and staffing - it is what it is, but I also just made a large investment and feel unsatisfied with that answer.

Edit: Build week in April 22. The noise has been noticeable since pickup, but seems to be getting worse. Still under 1000 miles.

Did they replace your transmission and the noise (real or imaginary) is coming from a new one?

Let me add to the weirdness - No noise at all on 5 of my last 6 starts!! Weather is improving; so possibly a temperature thing? I also just crossed 1000 miles, so….. possible break-in of some sort? So strange.

Watching some of the videos...is the noise being discussed as the issue the constant loud sewing machine sound or the intermittent grinding noise when shifting? I was just thinking it was odd that the 2.3 made so much noise and then it turned into WebMD...

Hah! I guess if we combine the two noises together, it sounds like a sewing machine tumbling in a dryer.

Noise picked up again yesterday after being quiet for over a week - I can’t figure out a pattern at all. Noise also persisted after warm up. My service appt is Thursday.

I am originally from South Bend, IN and they are a great resource nationally for clutch products and upgrades. I've gone to them for years when doing swaps and projects for affordable solutions. All my turbo Fords have SBC parts in them.

My transmission was just replaced, however I can still hear little noise.

Ah that’s a bummer. Bit of a nightmare for you to wait so long for a replacement after already being disappointed to have this happen in the first place.. I figure some % of these transmissions all have the same issue.

I dropped mine off today at the dealer. They have to put a call in to ford and already said it will be a transmission replacement, as they’re not servicing them right now - same as others stated.

The foreman took it out with me and was pretty shocked by the noise, obviously they haven’t seen many Broncos yet with the MT. They have to keep it until they get the call in and order the parts, but he said if it’s projected for anything more than a week for delivery, I can have my Bronco back and drive it until then. It still drives fine aside from the ‘rocks in a can’/struggling keureg noises. At least I have a useful function for the annoying auto-start so I don’t have to listen to the transmission bouncing around at traffic lights.

I’d guess a recall could be coming, if you had it happen on 2 transmissions, I wonder how many think that the noise is ‘normal’ and aren’t reporting.

I definitely don’t want to spend an extended summer in a rental, my Nissan Altima from Enterprise was a deflating piece of work to drive around in today, hope to pick up the noisy Bronco tomorrow and at least enjoy some good weather and turn up the radio.

I’ll post any interesting updates.
