I have a 2 door BD with 33s. The Standard coilovers are not bad, but I want a little more height (about an inch) and more wheel travel. I don’t want to spend $3000 or more for aftermarket coilovers.
So like many here, I’m thinking of going with either BL (Special) or Sasquatch (High Ride) coilovers. Ideally I want the ride height of the High Ride AND the travel of the Special. Could that be accomplished by removing the bump-stops in the High Ride coilovers?

High ride is what Ford parts calls the sasquatch and special is the Badlands.

I don't know that we have gotten dimensions on them yet but could you trim off a little from the high-ride bump stop during install or use the special bump stop with the high ride shocks?

It would be good to understand the travel and total throw differences between the high ride and the special. I am not sure what the differences are or if you would be at risk of damaging the high ride shock with a small bump stop. At the same time I am running Hitachi bump stops with my high ride shocks... haven't had an issue yet, doesn't mean I won't. It's still an unknown.

Excellent! Sounds like you’ve done what I’m thinking of doing. Did you compare the Hitachi and High Ride bump stops? Any noticeable difference (thickness or compressibility)? How many miles on your “Special-High Ride” suspension?

If you want to keep the articulation go with the Badlands. If you want a little more lift maybe put a level kit on it after.

I would pull the bumpstop, as it is protecting the high shock from bottoming out internally.

Good advice, but I can’t help but think that the only differences between the Special and High Lift shocks are the location of the spring perch and the height (thickness) of the bump stop.

Yeah - so we’ve been told:
-Squatch has 10-20mm less articulation than Special
-There is a bump stop
-It is about 1/2” taller
-It has different springs that are barrel springs

I am guessing the same shock body—even though they flipped the reservoir—with a longer piston rod, and the bump stop is there to limit upward travel.

Either way, I’d leave the bumpstop in on a high, or use the special and consider a level kit.

The sasquatch uses a different coil spring and shock body. Possibly 0.4" longer shock and 0.3" longer spring to yield 1.1" curb height increase. The compression bump stop is reportedly slightly taller as well for 35 tire clearance (and to prevent spring over-compression). It might work to install a BL bump stop on a SAS coilover, but may be risky. The guaranteed way to keep articulation with 33's is to add strut spacers on BL coilovers.

I thought I read somewhere that a strut spacer on BL or Sas coilovers will create too much angle on the driveshaft CV. Is there a limit? I’d only be looking for another 3/4” to 1” height increase.

Folks , after doing alot of articulation test with the stock SAS tire, I have concluded that the extra bump stop is really more of a spacer to keep the tire from rubbing... (ford elected to put it there vs the top or bottom of the shock because it would look like an afterthought and it wasn't) once the bump stops are shorted, the SAS shocks will travel at least 20mm more. Which equals about 35 mm at the tire.

You can slide the bump stop down on the front shock and see how thick it is.

I suspect since the SAS shock is longer overall, then it also has the most travel available ONCE the bump stop is removed or shortened.

Additionally, since the shocks are position sensitive, they really do slow the compression ALOT at the end of the stroke, so therefore I think the bump stop spacer could be removed entirely. (Unless jumps and whoops are your normal everyday thing)

Time will tell, but the major aftermarket companies (Fox, Icon, Fabtech, King, etc) are increasing front coilover length 1" (1.5" lift) and 1.25" on rear for sasquatch. Just don't expect warranty to cover CV failures...

Note that a Bilstein insider posted the detailed sasquatch coilover specs on b6g, but I am not sure if it included the bump stop. I'll know soon when I disassemble my coilovers and measure coil-removed articulation.

I'll search for that insider post. Thanks.
