Why do we hate Auto Start/Stop so much?

The thing that bugs me the most, is that it doesn’t stay off. It should act like an analog button, like the radio and AC buttons do.

I don’t mind the auto stop-strart. I am truly baffled by how many people on this forum are so angry about it.

I see you have Base listed ... Manual or auto?
There is a world of difference between the two.

I had an auto for 9 months (still have he manual) .... the amount of A/S/S events on the auto was insane and VERY intrusive to the driving experience....to the point of being a safety concern, as noted in my earlier posts.

I've driven other vehicles with A/S/S and they were better managed, shutting off when it was logical and/or sensible.

Ford's A/S/S is hyperactive, lol!

both my vehicles have it. F150 and bronco. Doesn’t bother me being on. That being said I had 2017 escape with the ASS system. As the car aged I began having issues with it. when the car shut off, i would get a message shift to park and restart. It would catch me off guard and make me look like the ASS at the red light trying to restart my car…. That was frustrating so I bypassed the system. If my current vehicles ever give me that issue, it will be bypassed.

I've always been uncomfortable with vehicles with Auto Start/Stop. The first time I experienced the "feature" it was somewhat disconcerting having the vehicle stop running at a red light. At first, I fought against it. Although I never fully reprogrammed it out of existence, I'd still generally turn it off each time I'd drive the vehicle. The Bronco version of ASS seems to be a little less aggressive than some of my former vehicles. However, there are still little annoyances such as it turning off the engine as I stop in my driveway, only to immediately turn back on as the transmission is shifted to Park.

But why so much vitriol for a "feature" that is pretty benign. Certain consumers seem to hate this capability. Is it because so many of us from the older generations have been taught that starting/stopping the engine is wasteful or even actually damaging to an engine? Or because we are stubborn and don't like being told what to do by new technology that is often perceived to be imposed on us by the "nanny state"?

Clearly, the new technology and engine tolerances make this capability non-destructive in terms of engine wear and tear. It also, on the whole, leads to some incremental MPG gains.

So why do so many of us still feel angst or discomfort with ASS?

A reason for wanting to delete the feature is a personal preference. It should be easily disabled.

It is not benign compared to the product found in other manufacturer vehicles. My BMW engine stops and tge car stays put without any other action like removing foot from brake. Sadly my Bronco cannot learn "sit, stay" but wants to move when it is supposed to be patiently waiting for lights to turn green. How hard is it to engineer in the proper shutoff procedure used by everyone else?

Theres a difference, I grew up with them and they actually serve a legit purpose. Stopping and stalling at light to save 0.01mpg isn’t saving lives now, actually can be harmful to certain individuals

I always find these comments laughable. I'm pretty sure the MIC top was designed to crack and leak, the windows designed to flop around and the manual trans designed to sound like a blender crushing ice. SMH

Sure. Additionally, I haven't found robust evidence that auto start/stop is simply being tacked onto existing powertrains not engineered with that use case in mind. If you find any, definitely share.

I'm just screwing around. Like OP, I don't really notice it and it really doesn't even come on half the time, so I have no strong feelings. I just think it's funny that you can never tell what topic will be polarizing.

The laughable part is obviously where you implied it was designed to start/stop so it did not harm the engine. Like nothing ever fails just because they designed it not to ,lol.

Oh, I think you misunderstood. I posited that the engines were designed with auto start stop in mind, as opposed to the OEM slapping something stop a platform that wasn't designed to accommodate frequent starts and stops - not that the engine itself is bulletproof.

It may have been said else where but it is recommended on turbo boosted engines to idle before shutting off to ensure all components stay lubricated.

Use the ASS feature or disable it, but if oil is recommended for your engine components how is it circulating when the engine is off?

I have seen some videos online from a lack of lubrication on the ecoboosts in Ford’s and it is not pretty.

For me, it’s disable. I am not saving the planet for activating it. Not saving enough gas to invite potential risks on thousands of dollars in damages to internal components.

yes, keep those fluids changed. But remember, while oil has advanced, filters have not (as quickly). Oil gets contaminated and can create carbon buildup on your engine internals. Your engine life has many factors but ultimately, how much gas money are saving by using ASS and even some of the previously posted articles acknowledge parts wear out with use.

so even though they are made to last longer, when you use ASS, you are using them faster.

once article noted starter parts lasts up to 300,000 times instead of 100,000 times.

how many times, using ASS, does your car turn off when driving one way? If you cracked your car 100,000 times, the new parts will get you 3 on and offs per trip. If your ratio is more than that, you might get premature wear.
