Hi gang,

I rotated my tires at 5k miles and the surface rust on all 4 wheel hubs surprised me. I've had foreign makes previously and never saw this even after 100k miles. Just looking for some feedback that this is normal, expected, or WTH?

Thanks!

Funny, I searched for this topic and didn't turn up any results. However, down below in "similar threads" I now see:
Rusted Hubs(?)

Sorry for the dupe.

I've never owned a vehicle that didn't do that even the 3 years I lived in Florida. Pretty much normal.

Well that thread wasn't much help, LOL.

Anyway, yes, surface rust. Agreed. Just hadn't seen it on my other cars.

That’s nothin! I’ve got a Land Rover Discovery 2. It has Lug bolts and the bolts have sort of a decorative sheet steel (stainless?) cover on the bolt head.

Had a flat out on a trail and when I went to remove the spare off the rear door mount, for the first time ever btw, one of the bolt heads inside the cover must have rusted just enough to cause the cover to bulge and prevented the lug wrench from fitting over it. That was not a good day!

I’ve not had the wheels off my Bronc yet but that’s pretty normal for all makes. It’s unpainted cast iron which rusts when you breathe on it, that and the corrosion that naturally occurs from the aluminum wheel tight against the cast iron rotor cause the surface rust. I would not worry about it but if you wanted to you could clean the hub with a wire brush then paint the hub to try and prevent it in the future.

An unpainted part that goes through constant heat cycles and it has surface rust? The horror...
