I drained my oil on my Bronco with the stock plug and oil went everywhere off course. Replaced with the UPR easy drain plug. Plug went in and locked on the plastic tabs on oil pan just like the stock. However I wanted to see how it comes out. Was afraid to crank on it hard and damage the plastic pan. I tried pushing, pulling, and twisting it counter clockwise and could not get it out. I didn’t attempt to remove with pliers or push the tabs up, so then said screw it and filled the Bronco up with oil. I tried contacting UPR but they don’t return my emails or calls. Customer service for UPR is not great.

Does anyone know how to remove it? Any tips would be appreciated for my next oil change. If all fails I will go back to the stock plug or get a femco. Don’t want a Ronin because of the reports of cracked pans.

I think you need to get the tabs to clear it + push the plug in before you turn it, but I don't have one so I can't confirm.

Yeah tried that. I can push the plug in but the metal tabs don’t clear the hump on the plastic pan turning it counter clockwise. It seems the plug needs force for the metal tabs to clear. The problem is you don’t really have a good surface area to grab and twist the plug. If you grab the blue drain part it just spins to drain. It would be nice if you could take the drain plug out with a socket.

I just did my second change (installed the Ronin after the first) and it worked like a charm.

Anyone know why/how Ronin plugs cause cracks?

I'd slightly bend the tabs out when you want to take it out and bend them back in before you reinstall. I remember looking into these plugs and they said you can just push the tabs back in if needed.

The problem with the Ronins is people trying to remove them. They use force without applying enough pressure and crack the pan. Check out several of the f150 forums.

OK, so operator error versus an actual problem?

I wouldn’t say operator error on the Ronin because some posts I’ve read they applied a ton a pressure and it still wouldn’t remove. More so like my UPR. šŸ˜‚

You have to push in as you turn. I played with mine a number of times before installing it.

If you don't push in, you will break something...

Silly question, did you remove the small Black plug in the end of the drain plug ?

If you'll notice, there's a small set screw on the side. Its not designed to come out, but is there as a detente. I had to use a vice and channel locks to break it open passed it the first time. I complained to UPR but they were no help. They would not even consider accepting a return unless it was in pristine condition - mine had channel lock scratches.

The whole point of the Ronin plug is that you DON’T have to remove it. It has a secondary cap that you loosen and it controls the oil flow or you can attach a hose and direct the flow wherever you want. I’ve had my Ronin plug for several oil changes now and honestly can’t see how people are cracking their oil pans right and left. Definitely looks like operator error to me.

Yeah, that's what thought too...you don't normally remove the Ronin plug in the 1st place.
