@JediMcMuffin, have you considered putting your MaxTrax on top of your Leitner boxes? I just got one of the Leitner Roof boxes and they are sweet.

I have! I'm only 5'7" though, so getting up that high is rough which is why I have the Leitner boxes to begin with. Getting things in and out of ROAM boxes was no bueno for me. I also don't always use the Leitner boxes, those are pretty much only for when the family joins me on trips.

Being any height dealing with the Roam boxes on the roof is entertaining. This last week I was standing on my spare tire lol.

The Leitner boxes are great, just wish they were better weather sealed. I bent their latches inward which actually helps a lot, but I stick anything that MUST stay dry in a garbage bag first. I only put lightweight/bulky stuff in them. I am very happy but damn are they pricey.

I have a trip coming up in May, I'm finally going to get on it and build a Youtube video series on how I select gear these days and what worked/didn't work for me for my use case. I think a lot of folks get really mixed up. A good example is an RTT which I ran for a year. Giving up my entire roof rack for something that ONLY sleeps two people doesn't compute to me. Knowing what I know now, the right vehicle for me is a mid-size pickup with a bed cap. Storage capacity is my biggest need for a family of four.

@JediMcMuffin, have you seen the steps that slip into the door latch? I tried one at a local rack shop. Not bad for periodic use. I'm rather full figured and it seemed pretty solid with me on it.

I thought about using those, I have a half rack so it ends at the rear doors, but since there is sufficient room, I just step on my tires going from the rear door jam.

I used the Maiker Off-road side panels from Amazon. Also, stay away from the 39” KO3s. They are not round and will not balance. We tried 10 different tires and could only get 2 of them to ride decent. KO2s are ten times better.

That looks like a great setup for my usage, do you have any photos of the install? I am mostly curious how it is attached (or not) at the bottom, and if they provided a weight limit in the instructions. It doesn’t look like they list a weight limit on amazon.

Sorry I don’t have any other pics. It pretty much just wedges between the top and fender. They’ll handle quite a bit of weight. I wouldn’t hesitate to put 40-50 lbs on it.

Thanks for all the input. Pak Rax is on it's way. I don't like the idea of horizontal fuel up on the roof so Trailrax - you got me.

I don't think Rotopax hold enough gas.

I consdered mounting a Wavian can on each side of my Trailrax for long trips away from gas stations. But I'll probably mount them on top of my rack.

The PaxRax are better for holding things that might be needed for all or almost all trips.

The way I look at it is if 4 gallons doesn't get me to safety then do I really deserve to be saved? lol.

I like that! But keep in mind you probably won't be getting highway mpg, either. I've just got the one 3 gallon can, but I haven't ventured far enough for that to be a concern yet. Figure if I manage to punch a hole in my tank or rupture a fuel line some how, it will be enough to get back to some form of civilization if I can rig patch.

I estimate half my highway mileage when off-road which is why I don't think a Rotopax carries enough gas to be worthwhile.
