SUBWOOFER BOXES FOR BRONCOS

Has anyone used or installed the GROUNDSHAKER or Fox Acoustics subwoofer boxes in their Bronco? Just trying to get feedback on quality and opinions of either one.

There's more than a few problems with a pre-fab enclosure.

One, you're limited to finding a subwoofer that matches the cut-out diameter. For example, a JL 12TW3 has a cut-out diameter of 11.625", and an Audiomobile 2412 has a cut-out diameter of 11.00".

Two, when you actually find a subwoofer that matches the cut-out diameter of the pre-fab enclosure, you need to look at air volume. At 1.45 cubes per individual chamber on the Groundshaker enclosure, that's a lot of air volume.

Using the same two subwoofers as an example, the JL only needs 0.80 cubes, and the Audiomobile only needs 0.85 cubes. Too much air volume, you lose tight, detailed bass response. Not only that, you have an oversized enclosure that is probably 40% larger than it needs to be in your cargo area.

Three, with individual chambers, you're somewhat limited on how the subwoofers can be wired, and what amplifiers you might want to use. For instance, if you have a 1500W, 1ohm stable amplifier, you would want two DVC, 4ohm subwoofers wired in parallel for a final impedance of 1ohm to use that power.

In short, it makes more sense to figure out what subwoofers and amplifier you want to use, then find someone (MTI Acoustics) to make an enclosure that matches the specs of the equipment you're using.

Appreciate the information, I'm planning on using a AudioControl 800.1 amp for the 2- 12" subs, trying to plan what subs I want to go with and what amp for the front stage so wanted to get feedback on the boxes, but you are right, I'd rather have someone build me a box for the subs than a Prefab. I also looked at the MTI box below, but man $500 is a bit too much IMO.

The enclosure from MTI is only $200 more than the pre-fab enclosure. No tax, no shipping, and in your case, you can't put a price on the cargo space saved.

If you think $500 is too much, you don't want to know what I paid for my MTI enclosure...

subwoofer performance in a box can be easily modeled with WinISD. having a box "too big" has some drawbacks but if you understand them it will not make "loose bass".

generally, the course of action is to pick a subwoofer&box and then pick an amp that can supply enough power to for the output desired.

The subwoofer to enclosure relationship can be a bit complicated for someone new, so my recommendation is always to start with a properly sized sealed box and a 12" subwoofer from a reputable manufacturer.
