Just got a Bronco base with sasquatch. Is there a way to disable sport mode turning on 4A? In sport mode i get better mileage and would like it to default to 2H without me having to switch it back everytime

It depends on the 4x4 system equipped. ESOF does not, however Advance 4x4 can, since it has the ability to regulate power between front and rear axles.

Good to know. I have one bronco with advanced 4x4 and one with standard 4x4. On the ones I have the advanced 4x4 is paired with a manual trans. while standard 4x4 is paired with an automatic.

I've only played with the sport mode on the automatic since it changes shift points. I am not sure what other benefits sport mode really gives other than shift points. I generally observe that in normal mode the auto trans wants to lug the engine a little before downshifting and lugging is not good for fuel economy, so I am not surprised that sport mode is better. The fact that sport mode returns better fuel economy (for most this seems true) suggests to me that either the engineers don't fully understand what yields the best fuel economy or the normal mode is tailored around emissions testing first and fuel economy second.

I've tended to think sport mode with the manual trans is of little benefit since I control the shifts.

If Sport switched me to 4H every time I’d be annoyed too. I drive in sport with my 7MT a majority of the time. I don’t think it’s about the shift points as much as the throttle response and boost points on the MT.

And more responsive steering.

It's tuned to fuel economy and emissions for the EPA test profile, which is not the way folks drive in the real world.

I bought a stick shift, so I don't worry about it in the Bronco. But my wife's F-150 also gets better gas mileage in Sport Mode, especially in moderate city traffic (say 45-50 mph). In normal mode, Ford's automatic chases gears too quickly, so you end up using more boost, and boost kills MPG much faster than gear ratios. Sport mode keeps gears longer, and downshifts more aggressively. That keeps you in the power band longer, which again means less boost.

It took me a little while to figure that out with the MT. It’s like the harder I drive it the better mileage I get. Up until a certain point of course.

7 MT owner here. Sport mode definitely makes the engine pepper and is noticeably different than eco or normal mode. it's up to you as to whether that's a benefit or not. I certainly enjoy it.

Makes sense it is tuned to the test profile. Probably more tuned for emissions than fuel economy, but who knows, maybe it returns better economy in the test profile. Agree in normal mode it advances to the next higher gear aggressively which in real world driving all too often leaves it in the lower RPM low power band so one has to push the gas more and hit boost killing economy.

I think the whole reason for things like 10 speeds in an automatic it specifically keep in that low RPM range over a greater range of speeds which is fine as long as one isn't trying to accelerate.

My lesson with fuel economy vs RPMs and engine load was in my Bronco IIs. When that 2.9L V6 would get low on fuel it you would notice first with engine hesitation. As it started being less able to keep fuel to the engine that would get worse and worse. With a manual trans so I could control it, I learned quickly if I kept it in a lower gear and RPMs higher, I could get more distance while running out of fuel. Easily get 5 to miles after the first hesitation if I drove it right. If I wasn't careful, I might get a couple miles.

Thanks, I'll have to play with it. I've only got about 300 miles on that bronco. I recall it changing the throttle response rate, but not aware of anything in the engine tune that actually affects performance. By throttle response rate I believe that more or less affects position of the pedal for a certain amount of throttle unless there is something that controls how fast or slow the throttle position can be changed independent of how fast one moves their foot.
