Question for Manual Owners concerning FOB

My Auto won't let me shift out of park if it doesn't detect the FOB. Kind of useful if my wife drops me off at the airport and tries to drive away but I have the FOB

Just curious, has any manual owner tried to drive away without the FOB in their pocket? I wonder if it lets you go, or if it stalls when you let the clutch out or something?

I don’t have a manual, but I would guess it does nothing except for maybe put a warning on the cluster.
It certainly won’t stall the vehicle, that would be a huge potential safety risk.

Nah. Got rid of that a long time ago with ForScan.

It does this. Shows a warning that the key is not detected along with the asshole double honk. You can drive however long you want. It will also allow you to shut off the vehicle and restart it as long as you restart it within a small amount of time. It prompts you on the cluster of this as well. I’ve dropped my wife off at a store or something, forgetting she has the key with her.

I can confirm that my 2024 Big Bend with a manual transmission will not start without the key fob in range. A notice appears on the dash screen as to the reason why.

Sorry. The vehicle will remain running with the fob out of range, but will not restart after shutting down.

To add an interesting bit to this, the location of the FOB within the vehicle is pretty sensitive as well. I’ve gotten into the passenger seat with the engine off and the key in my right pocket to let someone else drive it and it wouldn’t start. It gave the “no key detected” warning. I had to take the key and put it in the console before they could start it up.

Let's engage in some speculation.

What would happen if a rowdy Bronco passenger (let's say a radical Kia EV owner with a nose ring) throws the key fob out the window without the driver being aware? A short while later, the Bronco (with an automatic) gets stuck in traffic due to a construction zone, and the driver places the vehicle in Park in anticipation for a long wait. When it's time to move again, the transmission will be stuck in Park, and the Bronco is holding up traffic in a construction zone.

If the transmission were a manual, the driver would be able to keep going as long as the engine was not shut down. But if the engine was shut down in anticipation of a long wait (or, God forbid, ASS kicks in) the Bronco is holding up traffic in a construction zone.

These are the kinds of unwinnable scenarios that turn up as requirements for software engineers to accommodate.

FYI don’t try to push start a Bronco with a manual. I was f’ing around and tried it on a hill. It threw up every error message and would not start until I pulled the battery cable to reset it. Lesson learned.

I tried that soon after getting my Bronco. It threw all kinds of codes. Then it finally reset. I think it's because the ignition isn't on unless you push the clutch in. Someday I may try disconnecting the starter so I can push the clutch in without it cranking and see if I can roll start it on a hill. Either that or install a switch in parallel with the clutch switch.

The first week I had my Bronco, I also tried this by turning off the ignition while still rolling. Yup, I also got a ton of error codes.
I did not need to disconnect the battery. The codes eventually cleared when I came to a complete stop. The reset took just long enough for me to think "I just broke my new Bronco, how am I going to explain this to my wife".
This is the first manual car I have owned that I could not do a rolling jump start. It's also the first car that had the Auto Stop/Start feature. So I attribute the inability to that and accepted what I own is reliable enough to never need a rolling jump.
