I leased my Bronco and have about 14 more months on it. I am planning on buying it out after the lease. I am already at 28K miles and I am considering buying an extended warranty from Granger Ford. I have two questions:

1. Can you buy an extended warranty while in a lease, knowing that you are going to purchase at end of lease.
2. Since I live in California, I cannot purchase an extended warranty from Granger Ford using my California address. I do have a vacation home in Washington. Will my extended warranty being null if I use my Washington address?

Thanks and I no doubt know I will have some blasted responses to this.

You can get the warranty from any dealer. I was stationed in Cali and all my warranties were out of Texas (Home State). So was my GF's and adult daughter.

A lease is essentially a long term rental. Once you give GRanger the vin it may get flagged as a FORD CORP. owned car.

You have up to 41 months to get any version of the Ford Protection Plan. You can add the plan at any time during your ownership before that date.

You can use your Washington address to get a Granger plan. Nothing gets mailed. It is all electronic. Ford doesn't care where you live. The plan is assigned and tracked by the VIN, where ever it is located.

Ford doesn't care who owns title to the Bronco. You pay them money, they fix the vehicle. If you buy the plan before the end of lease, and don't end up buying it out, more money for Ford. The next owner starts from square 1. Sorry, no prorated refunds.

I would steer clear of 3rd party insurance plans. They have lots of restrictions, exceptions, pre-approval, and inspection clauses - which equals delays and extended fixing time.

BTW - it was smart to ask before you plunked down your hard earned cash. Not a stupid question.

The guys above have pretty well explained it, but I would absolutely NOT buy it until the vehicle is titled in your name - which can be just days after the paperwork is finished if you buy it out at the end of your lease.

I have a similar CA dilemma. Does it matter if the car is registered in CA and you purchase the ESP through Ford using a family members out of state address like in TX or PA?

I main issue is that if I wait to buy it out at Lease end, then I will be over the 36,000 mile B to B warranty. I know my one option is to buy out the lease early.

That actually shouldn't matter - if it still qualifies for 'certified used,' which I think is up to 45k miles or so, you should still be able to purchase a Ford ESP. I might be wrong on that, but it used to work that way.

That said...How long was your lease for, and for how many miles? Most are 2-3 years and at 10k or less per year...you're WELL above that. With the miles you drive, you'd have been better off buying outright even if you had to get a loan...if you weren't going to buy it at the end they'd likely nail you for being way over miles.

Doesn't matter. You can use any address outside of California or Florida. Nothing gets mailed.

I have no experience with leases but I do know that when our Bronco was totaled I emailed Granger and had a prorated refund check in my hand within days of contacting them for the warranty that we had purchased.

Might be a different situation being wrecked but I would check to be sure.

In addition to above feedback, why not call Granger Ford & ask these questions? I'm sure they've run across these things & can advise how to proceed...IMO.

It is.

When the lease ends, you no longer have "ownership" a.k.a. "use" rights to the vehicle, and therefore, any "carryover" rights assigned to the vehicle are transferred back to the lessor. This includes all warranty rights. That is why it is important to synchronize your extended warranty term with your lease term.

However, you can cancel the lease and receive a refund when you get ride of a vehicle.

My experience is the cost to cancel a lease to dump the vehicle is WAY GREATER than any warranty refund. This whole conversation is about $$$$, not legal rights. The latter is just there to muck up the former.
