Hi folks - I appreciate all the suggestions and pictures; it's been super helpful!

I've narrowed down the ones I like the most for my application, and have added a poll to the original post. Please take a moment to share your favourite of the bunch as I've narrowed it this far, but am indecisive as I like all 3 options.

Thanks very much!

Any of the ones without the top plate just look like ankle breakers to me. Maybe in real life, there's no way your foot can slip thru, but knowing the wife and kid .... I expect something like this...

I never had an issue on my Grand Cherokee ones, but they were slippery... I guess it added to the rock "slider" component of it. In hindsight, I should have LineX'd the top or something.

This is the number one consideration tbh, once the wife started looking at all the options. She was like that ones a no and that one and etc... the LOD and JCR were the only 2 she was like I wont break my ankle on them. Sucks that so many have top plates with holes or open areas in the design.

I went with the havoc off-road trailcrawlers .
Can't beat that price, $600 shipped. I am sure they are not as robust as the $1200 versions, but I am never doing heavy duty rock crawling, this is more to protect the body panels from driver stupidity on medium trails. Debating between them and the ZROADZ that are slightly more expensive. How do you like them? Do they hid the ugly pinch weld sufficiently well?

https://zroadz.com/i-23915786-2021-...ries-rock-slider-side-steps-part-z745421.html

Mounts to the under body factory mounts two each and the lip. Been on the Rubicon and to Moab in the last 1 1/2 years all good.
Going to go with either these or the Havoc TrailCrawlers. These are very well priced, currently can be had for around $800 shipped after tax.

From the pics you seem to have the R1 version. I kind of like the cleaner look of the more streamlined R2 better. ZROADZ makes no effort to educate its customers on why they would consider the R1 vs R2 vs R3. Is it all about cosmetics?

PS I asked the AI chatbots and they agree on the characteristics below... which is strange, give that the R1s are the most expensive.

Key Differences:
  • Design:
    • R1:The most basic version, offering a clean and minimalist design. It provides protection for the rocker panels and a step for easy entry.
    • R2: Builds upon the R1 design with a slightly wider step and a more aggressive look. It's ideal for those who want additional protection and a more rugged aesthetic.
    • R3: The most robust option, featuring a wider step, a more pronounced kick-out for better clearance, and additional reinforcement for off-road use. It's perfect for serious off-road enthusiasts.
  • Step Width:
    • R1 has the narrowest step.
    • R2 offers a wider step for easier entry and exit.
    • R3 has the widest step for maximum comfort and stability.
  • Kick-Out:
    • R1 has a minimal kick-out.
    • R2 has a more pronounced kick-out to help you slide over obstacles.
    • R3 has the most aggressive kick-out for enhanced off-road performance.
  • Reinforcement:
    • R1 offers basic reinforcement.
    • R2 has additional reinforcement for increased durability.
    • R3 features the most robust reinforcement for heavy-duty off-roading.
In summary:

  • R1: Ideal for basic protection and a clean look.
  • R2: Provides a balance of protection, style, and functionality.
  • R3: Designed for serious off-roaders who demand maximum protection and performance.
