Hey guys I know this is a “Bronco” forum but I’m have a debate with my boyfriends and need to get a consensus. Okay, so if I buy the car in the photo below (LS1 Trans am early 2000’s) is it lame or not cool if I do NOT get a cam on it. The vehicle you are looking at has under 30,000 miles on it.

My argument against it is that it’s nearly a classic, I love the car for what it is and think changing certain characteristics may change the spirit of the vehicle. It’s a friendly debate lol. Please give opinions!!

Definitely don't get a cam or mod anything it's an old car plus like any mods, besides easy bolts ons, it's opening a can of worms. Most are waste of money unless going full out dropping $10K plus.

To reap benefits of a cam you'll need ECU tune, headers and exhaust plus high performance cats then you'll have sensor issues throwing codes that's throws of fuelling rations etc....for example. May not pass state inspections and will kill resale which doesn't matter if it's a daily.

In her defense - who would know more about taking a perfectly good car and hacking it up than off-roaders?
This comment is amazing lol. I can be guilty of doing the same thing. But not with this. If all you’re interested in is horsepower why not just go buy a Tesla.

Sorry! It had to be done though.
As much as I love 4th gen F-bodys, no, no it didn't.

That being said, yes it will retain value left stock but it will never be a valuable "collectors" car. It just won't. Modding it and putting a cam is also not the mechanical nightmare that 23OBX2.7 bizarrely states. Putting a cam in a v8 has been around since the dawn of hotrodding and not a mystery at all.
Like I can't even wrap my mind around what the fuck he's rambling on about at all.

In matters of taste ....

I'll almost always default to ...
"it's YOUR car, do what YOU want with it."

Hmmm, rumble around in a slow(er), but wicked sounding V8 ....or....
hum around quickly in a silent EV ...
Most here will pick the V8.

I'm an F-body fan as well, so the V8 Camaro/Firebird will easily win my vote every time.

Like adding 600 lb of primitive aftermarket mild steel market accessories to replace OE light weight AHSS parts, heavier wheels and tires, then needing to blow $7K on suspension to handle it reliably, then discovering need more power so blowing another $10K on turbo kits, IC and tune to get same acceleration as stock or maybe a tad better.

Growing up on a farm where we had fully equipped shop and Aircraft Tech engineers plus skilled machine shops in town, with never ending engine builds to pass the winter months when not snowmobiling or dirt biking I can personally attest that unless one has a carbed engine with no ECU a cam swap is not worth it unless just want the lumpy idle. Even with carb and no ECU still need headers, exhaust, likely ignition and probably carb upgrade that's $4K min alone on top of cam but you should probably swap out heads as well there's another $2K if lucky.

The 0-60 time of that is around what a Toyota Camry TRD gets. Would you put a cam in a Camry?

Just leave it.

My apologies - he’s a really active member here so I figured this would be a good place to get opinions. Thank you very much for your comment though lol
