For me it's because the switch to them is being mandated by governments (across the world), not the consumer.

People switched from horses to cars and trucks not because the gov't made them switch, but because the car was superior in just about every measurable way.

Once EVs are better in most/every way, people would switch on their own.

I have zero hate for EVs and wouldn’t mind one for my 100 mile commute. I never really thought about it like you put it and I absolutely 100% agree with your assessment. One has to have their head in the sand to think IC vehicles are not destined to be phased out sooner than later but exactly as you said, the EV experience has to be close to equal or better than driving on gas.

I think too the whole superiority complex they have surrounding being “one” with EVs needs to stop. Nobody is barbaric or a hater for refusing to jump on the bandwagon when the technology isn’t a good replacement for the majority of drivers out there.

In all seriousness though, it's pretty simple- as long as you completely take your foot off the accelerator, brake lights should be visible as they would when pressing the brake in an ICE.

The one I was behind was modulating braking, as one would normally do when going around a bend. Me, I would be off the go-pedal and onto the brake pedal--which lights up brake lights. Not stomping on it, just lightly braking. Light braking should always activate the brake lights.

So your message is, if the one-pedal asshole is not planning to come to a complete stop, if he's just slowing down like what happens all the time in traffic, then the design of the car creates asshole behavior of not activating the brake lights that are there to signal your actions to other drivers.

Safe driving demands being you predictable. When you're going to deviate from what you're doing--be it slowing/stopping or turning--the way to be predictable to those around you is using your lights. Brake lights, turn signals. A Tesla driver choosing one-pedal driving knowing full well that his signal lights will not activate as he modulates the go pedal to activate and intensify regen braking, is choosing to be unpredictable.

Know your vehicle. So what if it gives you a tool like one pedal driving. If that one pedal driving makes you more dangerous on the road, don't use it. You're not obligated to use it.

If you like and use turn signals, why would you use an active braking system that deliberately does not activate brake lights?

There's no denying, minivans are the correct tool for the family job. I mean, when it's the right tool, you use it, right? You don't scoff at the pliers and pull out a hammer just because you think pliers are "soulless," right? And when you have a family, you do all sorts of things you wouldn't do if it were you by yourself.

We had minivans for over 20 years. And frankly, the latest Chrysler is a thing of absolute luxury beauty combined with incredible versatility when needed.

Over the years, we've watched the world transition from cars to what they've been calling "SUVs", and then to "CUVs". Really? What's a "crossover"? We found them absolutely silly for most people. They lack the space of a minvan while adding the unnecessary bulk that a car doesn't have. It's a tool looking for a job, not the right tool for any job. Me, I like cars. Apparently people can talk themselves into all sorts of silly things. Just look around.

My wife was finished with minivan, and so--like you--we ended up with Bronco. Not one of the soulless SUVs or the very few cars left on the market (take away the Koreans, which I won't buy, and it's very VERY few cars left on the market). Frankly, it's one of those things we would never have seen ourselves buying, but as the man said, sometimes you just gotta say "what the hell".

And it turns out she loves it. Absolutely zero regrets.

I just don't like feeling funneled into the same group of choices that everyone else falls into. I'm not contrarian for the sake of being so, but I dislike most modern trends.

I haven't noticed an issue when driving behind an EV but I'll pay more attention and see if I can pick up on what you're saying and, if so, try to make it one less asshole on the road!

I'm kinda jumping in mid on the conversation but wouldn't this be similar to us manual drivers? I'll downshift for a corner and never touch my brakes, same when slowing for traffic and let the engine do the braking. Now if I see someone coming up on me fast I'll tap my brakes so they'll know but it seems the driving style for most is that they're either on the brakes or on the gas ... not much in between anymore and unfortunately it seems expecting them to keep safe distance and actually monitoring traffic is a lost art.

Similar, but no, not the same--regeneration can slow the car WAY faster, and WAY farther, than simple downshifting can do.

I'll downshift for a corner and never touch my brakes, same when slowing for traffic and let the engine do the braking. Now if I see someone coming up on me fast I'll tap my brakes so they'll know but it seems the driving style for most is that they're either on the brakes or on the gas ... not much in between anymore and unfortunately it seems expecting them to keep safe distance and actually monitoring traffic is a lost art.

Yup, But people are hardly aware that such a thing as a maual transmission exists anymore, so yes, when engine braking in traffic, I'll generally give a light tap on the brakes if I see someone coming up quickly.

I've also noticed that people don't give any space at lights on hills anymore, they'll come up right on your bumper without even a thought that the vehicle might come back a few inches before going forward...

I'm with you on that--but it's not so much the modern trends themselves, it's the fact that in implementing those trendy things they take away the tried and true and FORCE us into the modern trendy things.

Oh I dislike both the trend and the narrative behind the trend equally. The overly-complex nature of modern vehicles is mainly due to government overreach (EPA, NHTSA, etc), and partly due to manipulation of consumers into believing they need pointless features, too many choices, and constant updates.

I've worked in engineering for 20+ years, and about 7 of those were mainly automotive. I did work for almost every major auto manufacturer and their tier 1/2/3 suppliers out there to some capacity. The things I witnessed were absolutely asinine- overly complicated for the sake of being overly complicated. I don't work in automotive anymore. I swear, most people I interacted with were void of a soul and brain (especially at the project management level, some of them were flat out evil).

Unfortunately, consumers are too indoctrinated into thinking this is somehow "progress." Real progress is simplification.
