Need your input, please!

Hi guys,

I don't want to turn this post into a "what's the biggest tire I can fit..." kinda thread. Instead, I'm just looking for your opinion and experience to see whether what I have in mind makes sense or not.

I have an MT Black Diamond with the stock steelies. I have Yokohama Geolandars in 285/75/17 with absolutely no mods. Currently, this is what it looks like:

Before I get into what I have in mind, it is important to note that I set my Bronco up to be a car camper, light off-roader, and long road-trip kinda vehicle. The most offroad I will ever do is simple trails like you will see in this video:




I absolutely love my stock steelies and Yokohamas. So I wanted to go one size bigger to 315-70-17 on the stock steelies when I get new Yokohamas in a few months mostly because of the added width. Here is the information I've gathered on this forum so far:

My stock steelies are 7.5 inches wide:

The 315s require a minimum of 7.5

The size difference between what I have (285) and what I want (315) is negligible, except for the width:

Is it safe to assume that the 315s will fit with no problem and I should be able to just get the tires, mount them on my Bronco and drive off? Or is the difference in width going to cause some rubbing on full turn even at no compression?

I would like to keep the stock fender flares as the additional 1/2 inch width will make the tires flush with the flares.

And lastly, assuming what I have in mind would work but not 100%, should I have a basic set of wheel spacers handy when I do the install, just in case as a temporary solution?

First glance has me thinking 315 is too wide for a 7.5 wheel width. Try double checking the info with the tire manufacturer?

I think you are correct. On their website, it says 8.0 - 11.0, but on Discount Tire it says min 7.5

Hhmm. This may not work then... I'm emailing Yokohama anyway.

I emailed Yokohama and waiting for a response. I called my local Discount Tire, they have always taken good care of me, and they said that their system (Genesis or something like that) specifies that the 315s will work fine on my 7.5' steelies.

I really want to trust them, but I would still like other opinions, please. I know how important safety is and I do not want to neglect it.

Yeah I have a hunch the discount tire system that imports this data made a mistake. I'd hang my hat on what the manufacturer tells you. FWIW I think your Bronco looks great on 285's.

By all accounts the 315 tire on the BD +55mm wheel offset will be extremely close to rubbing the front UCAs. You may need to add a wheel spacer to avoid rubbing.

There are plenty of "can I fit 35s on non-sas threads". Remove crash bars and get new wheels with +30 to +0 offset (+30 to +20 is sweet spot for standard flares with a bit of poke). Your 35s will otherwise interfere with control arms.

I completely agree with you. The 285s have been great so far and I will go with what the manufacturer says. I'll report back when they write me.

No need to get under the truck to measure, it's been documented here in several threads. A 1" spacer will get you where you need to be if keeping the steelies.

Thank you for your long time support @gorgin4325. though please accept my apologies that we didn't do a better job explaining where our tire to rim width recommendations come from.

Tires are designed to flex in certain areas of the shoulder/sidewall which is where rim width comes into consideration. When a tire is pinched or stretched on a wheel that is too narrow or too wide, it's forced flex where it is not designed to do so. Due to this, and with safety always at the forefront, Discount Tire follows the US-TRA guidelines (Tire & Rim Association) for safe tire to rim width pairings.

With that in mind, we will install/mount the following popular 6G tire sizes on these rim width ranges:

LT315/70R-17 (7.5 - 11)
35x12.50R-17 (7.5 - 11.5)
37x12.50R-17 (7.5 - 11.5)
37x13.50R-17 (8.5 - 12.5)

LT285/75R-18 (7 - 10)
LT295/70R-18 (7 - 10)
LT325/65R-18 (9 - 12)
35x12.50R-18 (8.5 - 12)
37x12.50R-18 (7.5 - 11.5)
37x13.50R-18 (8.5 - 12.5)

I'll also note that these rim width ranges are for LT and High Flotation tires. P-Metric/SL can differ.

As mentioned, with the +55mm offset, you'll likely run into some rubbing issues so you may want to consider a wider wheel with lower offset for the 315/70R-17's, if you end up going that direction.
