Hello, looking for help please.

We have a misfiring 2022 bronco wildtrak here in Dubai, UAE. It is USA specs and imported. We had to replace the old engine with a new engine (same engine, 2.7L). We have tried everything to identify the misfiring issue but cannot solve it. It happens more when in S mode or 4L trailing.

We have taken the car to someone who can check out the tuning, to see if they can help us.

We have found that the car was tuned (probably in the USA) with the OLD engine. We didn’t know this information before we swapped into the new engine.

The new engine, I assume, could be (or is) misfiring because it’s not aligned with the previously tuned settings…

The problem is, because it was likely tuned in the USA, the tuners are locked out as it’s password protected.

Has anyone here come across this before?

Is there a fix, or a way to reset the settings to align with the new engine?

Here in the UAE the garages simply aren’t clued up on this stuff (neither am I, I just want to drive and enjoy the car). And because the car is USA specs it’s complicating things even further.

Unfortunately we have had endless problems with this car 😢

Any help is much much appreciated - no one here knows what to do.

Thank you

I did a tour in Dubai with the R.C.A.F. in '04 and remember that the UAE used mostly 95 Octane fuel. I am, by no means any expert but could that cause any issues?

95 octane is a higher rating than the 91/93 that Ford recommends, meaning it would be LESS likely to knock, especially at lower elevations.

OP is probably right in that the tune is causing the issue if it was specific to that previous engine. ALL engines, even mass produced, are ever so slightly different, and OEMs create a standard tune that learns to avoid having to tune every engine. This can mean that a new engine will run poorly until the PCM relearns the new motor...but with a custom tune that doesn't happen.

As Ducati says, a Ford dealership (even overseas) should be able to flash it back to stock, which is arguably the best starting place for this kind of diagnostic if you don't have access to what was done before.

Different measurement for the octane. Easy to misunderstand that but the US octane ratings are different. 95 in UAE is closer to 91 in the US

Interesting. I didn't know that, I thought it was pretty universal.

Regardless, even at 91, that is a level of octane that shouldn't cause issues for these engines. They're tuned to run on 87 without issue, and to run BETTER and with more power on 91+. On a factory tune, that is.
