Well this is a first...

I've been running without a muffler for a few days while fabricating a new muffler delete pipe. I noticed last night that the light on my tag seemed a bit uneven - come to find out that it was basically hanging by the harness. Seems that the heat from the exhaust connection point shooting straight out towards the bumper is hot enough to melt the license plate light assembly to the point that the mounting tabs shrunk inwards with the rest if the unit and could not longer hold onto to the mounting points.

Pretty wild...good reason to make sure the new delete pipe is angled down fair enough below the tag to prevent this from happening.

I believe someone posted similar issue a few months back but couldn't understand what was causing the issue. If I remember correctly his light was fine but wouldn't snap in place so he bought a new one and that wouldn't snap in...guessing the plastic on the bumper must of distorted in his case.

Hot exhaust may be the culprit

If it makes you feel any better, the entire harness, screws, and clips that hold the plate mount and the light to the bumper sheared clean off my rear bumper during a water crossing in the Ozarks. Deepest part of where I’m fairly certain I lost is was somewhere between 24” and 30”. Disappointed in that piece of the Bronco, to say the least

that will happen. I've seen people melt holes in a yeti cooler on a hitch carrier on the back of a lexus GX, which has the stock exhaust pointing straight out the back.

Ouch - that is a bummer, glad you at least made it across with the rest of the vehicle!

I think that's what happened to my plastic bumper and light when I installed the FI exhaust. I ended up replacing the bumper with an aluminum one from RH4X4 and just slammed the light in there the best I could. I bought a spare lamp from a dealership on ebay and keep it in my kit in case the old one ever fully melts or stop functioning. Figured I'd actually deal with the problem if/when that happens.
