How are your full-length steps to live with?

To those with full-length steps (like the AR Magnum Stirrup or the IAG EZ Step), have you found any downsides in regular use?

I have a 2 door BD with OEM rock rails, which is why I'm looking at these options specifically. Not looking at motorized folding steps, as this would delete the rails (and they're about 2x the cost). I suppose I could consider the short versions of these steps, but I much prefer the full lengths aesthetically.

I'm 6'4" so I don't have much trouble getting in/out myself, but I have family who struggle with the back seats, and even the front-passenger for some. I think a step would make it easier for them but I do wonder if it might also get in the way now and then. I feel like if I used the step when getting out, I'd likely bonk my head on the roof...

Ordered the AR Magnum Stirrups after seeing so many positive reviews. I have some cheap small steps from Amazon on temporarily and they are okay, but a bit high. Like that the Magnum Stirrup has the 2” inch drop option. Just too short to wait and use nothing temporarily. Hoping you get good feedback. Ordered black and wonder how color holds up over time.

I doubt anyone as tall as you need them. Those of us who aren’t (or with kids who aren’t) will use them a lot. I also find them useful for putting stuff up top.

Excellent point re: roof access. I will benefit from that, as I have a roof rack on the way. I doubt I'll ever benefit from them for in/out access, but I feel bad making others do the leap of faith.

I am waiting for the IAG running boards to arrive for my 2 door BL. I was torn between these and the IAG step.Decided to go with the full board to make it easier for rear seat egress, and extra roof top access. I hope an additional bonus will be the ability to reduce road rash from stones getting tossed up. BTW the ability to simply bolt them on the stock rock rail was a big factor for me. On and off are fast and easy.

All points in line with why I am considering these. Personally, I lean towards AR even though they are more $$$ because being aluminum just about eliminates any corrosion concerns (and I live in Canada so anything I do will be disproportionately expensive due to shipping+duty anyway).

I regret purchasing my full length IAG steps. I love the quality of them and how solid they are, but I feel they have too much of a lowering effect on my stock Black Diamond. They are necessary for my 5 year old to climb into my Bronco, but they are totally in my way. I’m 5’10, and my husband is 6’3. We had no need for steps, but now that I have them, they make it harder for me to get into my Bronco because I step over them. I don’t use them, because they set me up too high (I’ve actually hit my head really hard on my top when I was in a rush). I wish I would’ve gone with the individual steps, instead of the full length.

I’m hoping that when we put the level and bigger tires, they will work better for me and look better.

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking of. I think I can handle the getting in part, since I already just swing my right foot in and slide my butt sideways into the seat (which is a BLISSFUL improvement over the controlled fall I had to do with my old Civic). It's the getting out I'm more worried about... either need to get used to a longer reach to clear the step, or find some way to use them without hitting my head on the roof. The prior is more likely (which means that the tall guy buying the steps doesn't really feel the benefit of them at all... other than keeping relatives happy I guess). I suppose if you hit your head at 5'10', I shouldn't expect to be doing any high dives off the step.

Yeah, no high dives..lol. I actually asked my husband to remove them yesterday, until we get the level and bigger tires..but he wasn’t happy with my request. What can I say, I should’ve listened to him and not gotten them! He was right. My 5 year old does benefit from them, though. But I mean, she’s only going to get taller and eventually not need them.

I will say that one benefit of the steps is the protection they provide from rocks. I’ve heard them catch many rocks!

I use them to access the roof rack, they do provide great protection against door dings also.

As you can see, I have the Factory steps. While I'm tall enough to get in and out without difficulty (occasionally), I can't say that about any passengers I might have. I'd rather they step on these than the door sills. I can also say that as you get older, there will be days that you appreciate having this little boost to get in. Well worth the cost - no matter what option you choose (add-ons, replacement, etc.).
