Thanks for the link. Am I missing something or is California not available?
For California you will have to blame your state government for disallowing out of state sales of car warranty polices. Only option is in-state from a local Ford dealer which you already know most likely will not be $50 over cost.

Short answer is no for CA, sorry.

Well, sorry but the graph makes no sense to me. You have miles column), and then a dollar amount for each year column.

For the 3rd year at 36,000 miles it cost nothing because it is standard. That makes sense.

However, after that is that the cost per year for each year... or what. Do you add each row for the next year?

Lots of data... not much meaning (to me).

And then again... who pays the asking price for a extended warranty? I didn't.

What does each $$ cell for a given year mean? Kind of confusing.

How is this even enforceable? What happens when you buy a vehicle with extended warranty outside CA and then move to CA? Is the warranty void?

People who move out of California find they are getting tax bills from California in their new (home) states. I don't know how that works, but it happens.

If this vehicle doesn’t last 100k without needing major repairs I’ll be disappointed. It’s after 100k miles that I start to worry. I do drive 12k a year just for work alone. Add other mileage for hobbies and trips. If anything, it’s the 175k mile warranty that I’d want.
Agree. If everyone feels confident the first 100k miles will be trouble-free, why get a warranty that only covers up until 100k miles...you will want coverage beyond that 100k mark where you feel expensive things begin to fail. Also, people need to keep in mind, the price goes up for all these plans as you put more and more miles on your vehicle. If you choose an extended warranty is something you want, it might be worth it to get it sooner than later...the end coverage duration will be the same. If you are financing your vehicle, you can have the extended warranty in your financing as well.

Just had the cam phasers replaced on my 2018 Raptor under my 5yr/60K mi. extended powertain warranty (which expires the 20th of this month - June). So had it occurred a month later I would have been OOP for approx. $5K in repair bills. Until now, I had never purchased an extended warranty, but with Ford still having the cam phaser issues on the 2.7L (and all the tech in these Broncos) I'm definitly going to look into getting an extended warranty on this one. Hate that we have to "double pay" for the first 36K miles, but under $2K is a reasonable gamble (in my mind anyways) for a vehicle I'm going to keep for a long time.

Thank you for the analysis, always great to see another spreadsheet nerd :)

PS. anyone look into an optional windshield replacement warranty given how often these are damaged?

Darn, just followed the link and doesn't appear to be available in CA (not via Granger anyways).
Correct, your state wants to protect you 🥲

It’s available instate but not from outside of CA for CA.

Late reply here, but regarding the windshield, check with your insurance company if they have a low deductible comprehensive windshield option. That's what I intend to do.

I bought the Basecare ESP when I bought my F550 wrecker, and never once used it. It expired by time rather than mileage, and all repairs were done under either the factory warranty, emissions warranty, or covered by recalls. Dealer sold me Premium Care, Premium Maintanence, and Wheel and Tire Protection when I bought mine, and although I agreed to it at the time I'm considering cancelling them. I'm convinced they just didn't want to let a Bronco off the lot for $39K without piling on the warranties, because they knew they weren't going to get away with sticking me with their "market adjustment."

My car just arrived at @Granger Ford and now I need to decide which warranty I should go with, if any.

This is only for the PREMIUM CARE ESP WITH $100 deductible as of 3/22/23.

I did a cost per mile analysis for each option in the table to find out what would be the best bang for the buck. I hope this will help others make an informed decision.

MILES/YEARS345678910
36,000-$380$410$435$525$600$685$785
48,000$475$505$530$590$745$850$975$1,120
60,000$550$585$620$695$895$1,030$1,185$1,365
75,000$720$780$840$955$1,275$1,470$1,695$1,955
85,000$940$1,010$1,085$1,230$1,480$1,700$1,950$2,240
100,000$1,070$1,110$1,165$1,275$1,420$1,640$1,900$2,200
125,000$1,410$1,460$1,540$1,690$2,020$2,340$2,710$3,140
150,000$2,105$2,180$2,295$2,520$3,020$3,500$4,055$4,695
175,000$2,510$2,600$2,740$3,015$3,615$4,195$4,865$5,635

Here's a breakdown of the cost per mile for each option, calculated as (Price / (Miles * Years)):

1679500631368.png

Considering that most modern cars are built to last at least 100,000 miles without significant issues, it's reasonable to assume that the probability of encountering problems increases beyond the 100,000-mile mark. With that in mind, I chose a plan that offers coverage up to the 100,000-mile range.
Looking back at the cost per mile breakdown, the following options are close to the 100,000-mile range:
  1. 60,000 miles / 6 years: $0.0019 per mile
  2. 75,000 miles / 7 years: $0.0030 per mile
  3. 85,000 miles / 7 years: $0.0029 per mile
  4. 100,000 miles / 7 years: $0.0020 per mile
From these options, the 100,000 miles / 7 years plan stands out with a cost per mile of $0.0020, which is only slightly higher than the best overall cost per mile (60,000 miles / 6 years at $0.0019 per mile). This plan provides a good balance between coverage and cost, making it the best option when considering the potential for car issues beyond the 100,000-mile mark.

I hope this helps others in selecting which warranty to chose.
As of today, I am being quoted over double the premium for the 7yr-100,000, $100deduct. At $3075

Contact your local credit union and ask about mechanical breakdown Insurance.
It's basically the same thing as an extended service plan and it is typically much less than what the dealer will charge for the ESP.
