Driver's Side Seatbelt Not Retracting

Mine has been doing this from new, I have 43,000 miles on now and hoping my extended warranty will cover this

Reviving this thread to see if anyone has a solution that works beyond cleaning (no effect) and dealer warranty work (I'd rather go to the dentist). What's odd is how sudden this has arisen. 2 weeks ago it was just a minor annoyance the same it was from the day I drove it off the lot, slow to retract but nothing more than a touch to get it working. Over the last 2 weeks both the drivers (which gets more use) and the passenger side have quickly degraded to effectively not retracting at all.

An hour or so I pulled over with my daughter and we both turned around and disciplined our dogs in the back seat, pulling out significant belt so we could twist and face the back. When we turned forward, the belts were completely loose in our laps. I started to pull out but even helping it (from our seats) was not useful. We were effectively unbuckled. We actually got out of the Bronco and manually feed/retract the belt so that we could then buckle back up and continue home.

I was hopeful a good wipe down would have some effect, hoping that removing my hardtop last week had caked on dust, but honestly the belts looked clean before I wiped them down.

Dry Silicone spray lube after the cleaning - the entire belt

It’s not a permanent fix but for me usually works for a few months

Can get it at almost any hardware store. Also does well on the weatherstripping to help stop squeeks.

Brian, I have some Honda ShinEtsu silicone "grease" that comes in a tube, but it is 'greasy' when applied - does calm down the creaks and grones of the Bronco's window-to-weather-strip interface however.

Your referring to those spray products that come out/apply almost "powdery" to a surface are you not? Quick Google brings up many brands including a WD-40 one...

Yes, in an aerosol can. The PB blaster brand goes on almost like oil with a white look but does dry clear eventually. The WD 40 and most “house” brands go on just a bit wet but dry quickly and clear, like Pledge or something - I even use it to clean my seats and dash.

I usually just use the Ace brand from the hardware store. I have some WD 40 and it’s good, just twice the price of Ace brand and not noticeably any different. I have some PB blaster but don’t trust it on cloth, I’ve been using it on weather seals until I burn the can up.

Just make sure you do NOT get one with Teflon or lithium. Those will leave behind a white residue

Update: @Brian_B recommendation of dry silicon spray lube did the trick for me. I started at the hangers and sure enough that is where the "hang up" was . The belts are now retracting in their factory fresh lame sort of way, instead of not retracting at all

To be fair, lame retraction has it’s benefits. Strong retraction can cause mayhem if you’re careless with the buckle.

My 2024 Badlands with 30,000 miles has just started having this issue. I'm going to try cleaning forest and go from there. This is a relatively new problem. It seems I went from closing the doors normally to closing the seat belt buckle in the jam overnight.

I took my ‘22 in for this months ago, and they’re still waiting on parts. SA said it’s a recall issue, which was news to me. Supposedly the parts will be in by the end of October.

My driver side seat belt wasn't retracting, quite limp in fact. I wiped it good with a wet paper towel and the helped. Popped off the top cover. This was key to getting better access. Note that you want to pull from the bottom of the cover and not the top. Took a feeler gauge and got that in the slot. Finally a light wipe of isopropyl alcohol and the used the belt to rub that into the holder.

I highly suspect that in addition to the dirt it's probably also dead skin cells. Dang it if those things aren't everywhere!
