Was looking around at the dealership today and noticed that on the 10 or so broncos on the lot all but 1 had a painted top 5 were badlands and 5 were outerbanks. The outerbanks all but 1 were painted and they were mic tops. The badlands all had mod top ( white interior color) is this a thing or just a abnormality? I thought all painted tops were mod tops? I'm kinda suprised that anyone would buy a mic top at this point with all the cracking issues.

Maybe the top issue isn’t as wide spread as most believe it to be?

Lots and lots of MIC tops out there that are perfectly fine, obviously people aren’t going to create threads when nothing is wrong šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

My 22 wildtrak with less than 20k miles and a garage queen is cracking around the passenger window. Been busy this and didn't notice till last week. it's out of warranty as the 3 year window closed in July for me. I'm assuming big of ford and bronco fan as they come but the mic tops I feel are not good. I feel if I was buying a bronco I'd really shy away from the mic and definitely spend my money on one with the mod top. There are tons of examples of mic top cracking. I actually was under the impression that only the mod tops were painted from the factory, I was surprised to see the mic with paint
When ordering can you specify which top you get?

Yes, certainly plenty of examples of bad MIC tops on here. Forums are an echo chamber for things like this.
Like I previously mentioned, people that don’t have problems with their top, don’t create threads. If they did, it would be overwhelming more positive.

My 22 wildtrak has ~65k miles on it, lives outside 24/7 in Chicagoland weather and has never had a single problem.

Some are bad, most are fine. That being said, I obviously agree that the number of bad ones is far higher than it should be. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s some large scale issue where most are affected.

Also, there is no such thing as a factory painted MIC top. There are painted hard tops, and there are MIC (molded-in color) non-painted hard tops.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the 2 different types of painted hard tops. You cannot select which one you get, and to be honest, I have no idea why some get the older style and others get the newer style. But neither one are MIC tops

Never forget that most buyers are likely unaware of the issue. They don't even browse sites like this until they Google a problem.

They buy based on what is on the lots and that the four-box scam returns a number they can live with. The notion of ordering to spec is foreign to them. They also will be trading before it's paid off.

Ford does allow for after-warranty adjustment. Good service managers will help you out less than four months out of warranty...they will get regional involved, but it is worth pursuing AWA.

Quoting for continuity and clarifications.

@74broncosport : What is collectively referred to as the "Mod Top" no longer exists. Only the MY'23 and MY'24 Job1 Heritage and Heritage Limited received the modular HT. All current painted HTs have no removable rear windows which was the inherent trait that made the Mod Top modular.

As @Ducati1098 said, there is no painted MIC top from the factory. The painted HTs have two different interiors. The older painted HT interior looks similar to the MIC top interior. The design has since evolved to a more "finished" interior with the white headliner panels. There is no option to specify which version is sent with an order.

2022 OBX, 50k miles, no cracks in my MIC top. Have had the 16' Coleman (heavy pig!) Canoe on the rack a number of times...

My MIC has held up relatively well for 4 years.

That said, there is no way I’d buy a new Bronco without the Modular top now.

Doh! I just realized my hard top is a "MIC", I thought I had the upgraded version. Purchased less than a month ago. My main concern was noise on the highway, which, after several weekend excursions on the highway at 70-80 mph, is fine. My only negative feedback is the "hard ride" over highway bumps with my Badlands Sasquatch package, but the off-road capability offsets that, as I plan to do some off-road camping trips.

… MIC molded in color may no longer have color molded in.

I have a new 25 Bl 2dr built 7/20/25 ordered w MIC top, there’s a ford sticker that states primer was applied on 7/17/25. Guess it was finished painted after that.

It looks like it was molded like the ā€˜black’ painted top, just doesn’t have the port hole.

The primer the sticker is referring to is something applied to the inside, not the outside. They all have that sticker.

As @Ducati1098 mentioned, that primer is the interior. Still doesn't change that the exterior color is the thermoplastic molded in color. Early MIC tops have an unfinished interior except for the optional headliner.
