Came out into the garage this morning to take my dog for a walk and noticed something laying under the driver side rear of my Bronco and what I thought was water (turned out to be oil) running from it. On closer inspection, I notice it said “Bilstein” on it and immediately knew what it was… THE SHOCK RESERVOIR!

I can honestly say that, while I’ve seen reports of shocks leaking, I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this happening. I do not heavily off-road it and other than the occasional dirt road (nothing I wouldn’t take any SUV down and never at crazy high speeds), it rarely leaves the pavement. It’s a 2021 First Edition with only 21,000 miles on it.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is there some kind of bolt missing or did a weld fail? Currently waiting for the tow truck to take it to my dealer.

Yes there are several posts about this (including my own), it happens almost exclusively to vehicles in the rust belt.

I had both of my rear reservoirs fall off at almost the exact same time, they were replaced under warranty.

Probably too late to say, but you can drive it without the shock. I had my shock on the Escape come up through the rear wheel well. Fortunately they made a bracket to replace the rusted part of the wheel well. I drove it for weeks with only one rear shock.

Well this thread has been around for a while with a lot of other user experiences like yours, probably well worth your read to get more info on how they addressed it. Sucks because I have a BL non-squatch so I'm resigned to having to address this myself at some point, too.

Yup. Tons of threads on this. Built by the lowest bidder. Rock guard traps moisture too.

The best prevention is to use a metal hose clamp on the reservoir to the shock body.

Swap out to some Bilstein 6100s and you will be very happy.

How sad! You'll have to upgrade!

Well I guess I'll spray the rust prone areas around the reserviors with WD40 or fluid film for now on my 2 week old Bronco while I'm installing the shock skids. I'll save up and plan for an upgrade with 6100's when the failure happens. Then I will look at the bright side of it by bumping them up a notch from stock height. No point in replacing with the same.
