An amp will definitely come in the future then as well.
I think it's fair to say that it's a process... Some will find a jump off point at just replacing the factory speakers, some adding a sub and some doing both of those and adding an amp...

The JL Audio speakers sound great, but they are extremely low efficiency and will not drive well off the factory wimpy amp.... They need some power to make them sound good and play decent volume.
If I am looking for quality sound and not just loudness, it seems to me the JLs are the better choice after listening to the differences between them and say Infinity Ref or JBL Club. Do you think if I install them initially without an AMP they will still be an upgrade over factory even with their lower efficiency, or do you think I would be taking a step backward without the amp? I like the way they sound and I am worried the higher efficiency speakers, if driven by an amp will start to distort at higher power, so I want a speaker that can grow with the system as I add more to it, if that makes sense? Or do you think the 93DB inifinity as an example will sound find with an amp and more power. I am not looking to wake the nighbors when I drive by but I do like good clean music at a decent volume. Of course I was going by Crutchfield's speaker listening comparison with some bose headphones so hard to say if that is close to reality, but there was a noticeable difference in their sound.

I’ve always found Infinity to be a little too high pitched for my taste. They are a crisp and clear good quality speaker... and definitely worth a listen for a whole lot of folks. My preference is a more mellow, and probably slightly bass heavy sound... and everything is always judged against my old school Boston Acoustics setup... as I said before, I’m pretty outta date on most things car audio.

Just curious, I haven't noticed any reference to marine grade speakers. Are they inferior? Just thinking that I would hate to invest into a new speaker set and just them ruined by getting caught in a rain storm with the top down. I'm not an audiophile but did test drive a bronco and the speakers are definitely lacking and will need an upgrade.

I actually just ordered four and I likely have a long wait for my Bronco but Amazon had a good price on factory reconditioned units.

At this point from the reviews and pics of the std speakers almost anything will be an improvement.

I chose the JL C-1 speakers as a improvement over stock that if I go down the amp rabbit hole will handle and be that much better under more power. The 4in JL is a little on the low side with a 87.5dB at 2.83 volts but honestly with the front being limited already by the factory you are only going to see higher mid and high freq anyway in front.

The Infinity reference have a 92dB sensitivity in the 4in
Kicker has a 88dB for the 4in
cheaper Focal is 88dB and the higher end pricier models range from 83.5dB to 90.9dB

In the 6.5in size the JL is 93dB

The Infinity reference is 93dB
Kicker is 90dB
Focal ranges from 91.5 to 93

The 6.5in is not at a big disadvantage as the 4in. None of these speakers are a "bad" choice to replace the factory speakers. They will all perform better with a dedicated amp and that Kicker 200.4 is probably the route I go if I get an amp (wont go down that path until there is a T harness of some kind). The audio timing/correction seems really cool too.

Boston Acoustics?!! OMG, there is a name I haven't heard in years. I never knew they made car audio speakers, but the ones I had in my Apt. were always a reason for my neighbors to invite the cops to my place.... after a while the cops and I were on first name bases .... the BA's would literally shake the floors of the old victorian I used to rent in Brighton.

Yes, that's the thing with audio. What I like may not be what you like... With the headphones, if you noticed a difference, I would say run with it. And if you are going to add an amp later, the JL's will perform nicely. They just have a pretty low efficiency to expect much out of the factory amp. The Infinity's will have no problem with the power added, but if you don't like them as much, you would still be less happy in the end, in my opinion.

There are some other premium speakers, like the Morel Maximo, Focal Performance, Even the Polk's should be considered and they are less $$ than the above, including the JL's. But the only premium that I know of that is also efficient like the Infinity's and JBL's is the Hertz CX100. I'd be curious to do a comparison with those. But they are known to be a bit brighter sounding than some others. I'm leaning towards the Polk's right now...

Agree! And I tend to like the "brighter" speakers, so the Infinity and even the JBL's to a degree tend to be a little stronger in the mids and highs. Works well for my classic rock guitar heavy music.

A number of the speakers we are talking about are marine rated, like the Polk's for example. They carry a marine certification. If you think you are a likely candidate for top off in the rain, I would consider making the marine rating a priority, especially in the dash.

Yes, absolutely!!! It just might not play any louder than the stock speaker. It will be massively better in tone and detail.

This is all a matter of personal taste. I acutally really like the Infinitys and I have them in my CJ7 and they are fantastic. Just found the JLs seemed to be a bit richer but I am worried about the power they would need. The Infinitys also are half the price. So I am on the fence. I really would like to get good sound without having to add the amp. I'm not twenty any, more I don't need to be heard 1/2 mile away heading to my destination ;o).

I never had any of them in home, only in a ‘93 ranger and an ‘88 Bronco... 2 sets of 6.5LF pros and gradually went from a single 10” Kicker solobaric to two of them... then to the BA SPG 555.

We're in a similar boat... My whole development of the Jeep JK system was to maximize performance while minimizing cost to do it. The Infinity 6.5's were key to doing it due to their 2ohm impedance and 93db efficiency. Everything else we tried fell short and needed more "power" to get the results we were after. That speaker was discontinued about 5 years ago, and everything else we have tried has come up a little short, with the newer Infinity's still the best at 3ohm.

I think you have helped me settle on the Infinity's and since they have been good to me in the CJ7 I think I will stick with them and keep giving them my business. Thanks for the helpful feedback Rod.

Rod what Infinity 6.5s are you referring too? I plan to go with the Ref-4032CFX for the dash and rear but all other 6.5s I see are marine grade...?

The 4032CFX is the only 4" they have as far as I know. The closest match would be the 6532EX...

However, I was just checking out the Kappa 62IX and I haven't had the pleasure of testing it... But the 2.7ohm and 95db, yes 95db efficiency is very impressive. Especially for down in the footwell where we need the highest possible output to keep up with the improved efficiency in the dash.

Not cheap, but certainly has my attention.
