That's not necessarily correct, there's no way in hell the clutch pack could withstand the forces generated in low range.
This video shows a splined connection in 4H...the center splined collar slides in between the two shafts when the motor is driven all the way to the farthest point.

This was an issue Jeep has had with the wrangler 392 transfer case. Their version is awd all the time, and in 4hi/lo it just locks the clutch up all the way. What apparently happens is that if you tow an offroad trailer and spend a lot of time in 4lo, the clutch still slips sometimes, and eventually burns up compeletely resulting in no 4wd at all.

TrailRecon had this issue with his 392 and said its probably why he won't have another one.

The Ford automatic transfer case has the clutches for 4A but also locks up like a traditional part-time transfer case, so you don't have the durability issue like the Jeep version.

The 4A transfer case came out in the 2017 raptor and was supposedly the first of its kind.

Just dropped the bronco off this morning to have the transfer case replaced. Said I'll have it back in a few days.
