Yeah I know its a strong reaction, but FFS it is a brand new car. I am going to get the oil tested. The only thing that makes me feel SLIGHTLY okay, is that the metal has no discoloration (heat) so as you said likely a manufacturing defect. But come on, how can I NOT feel bad about this?

I guess you could not feel bad because now you know it didn't come from your engine, nor did it pass through your engine. It's not even discolored. So go to sleep knowing that even though it was a surprise to see it, nothing bad happened.

Man, I was so stoked to perform my first oil change today at 1278 miles! 2026 Heritage 2.3 7MT. My FIRST EVER brand new car.

I read the oil thread and the other one about the change in filters for 2025+ MY MPC engines. I settled on Valvoline 5w30 Advanced protection full synthetic and carquest premium extended protection filter based on the excellent feedback.

As I am pulling off the factory filter, I see a glint of metal. My heart sinks. And then I pull a strand of metal probably as long or longer than my phone out of the oil feed for the filter. WTF. I have been working on cars since I was 12 (I am 38) and never, ever seen anything like this in my life.

I stopped mid oil change and called Ford customer relations. Nice girl, could offer zero advice or help other than call your dealership and i'll notate your file. Again, WTF!? Pics for reference

I looked in the oil feed with my borescope and could see no evidence of anything further up the passage. There is nothing obviously wrong as you can see above. But how will I ever be sure that this motor isn't going to grenade while I have my wife and kids inside?

I am truly heartbroken. Not sure whether to initiate a buyback or have the dealer take it for months and replace the motor. I'm sure if they do that it will never be right again. I JUST FINISHED kilmatting the trunk floor, just got my procal in and was going to do the tune tonight. NOT ANYMORE! F#$%%@

You can't initiate a buyback . You dint meet the criteria. For lemon laws yiu have to gave it in service at least 3 times and I Bieber be without the vehicle for 30 days.

Given your Bronco has now lost 75% of its value because any future buyer is going to see this post and know your engine could self-destruct at any moment, it's basically a salvage vehicle now, so I'll offer you $15K to take this disaster off your hands and restore your peaceful night's sleep.

After sleeping on it, I suppose the only thing to do is drive it and get an oil analysis. If it blows up, it will be very hard to deny a warranty claim with the issue documented. I'm still pissed, but as they say - don't cry over spilled milk.

If you had taken your Beautiful Bronco to the dealer for the first oil change, my bet is that, that filter, and the metal piece, would have disappeared faster than an Oreo cookie at a weight watcher's convention.
I doubt Ford or the people at the dealership will give you an answer.

Your generation is so melodramatic. Buy back is only for an issue that can't be resolved after more than 3 attempts at fixing the issue. Ford only replaces engines under warranty when the original fails.

When I was a young mechanic, I bought my first brand new vehicle, it was a 1969 Harley-Davidson Sportster.
A year later, a guy showed up for an oil change, in a 1965 Corvette coupe, 327/375, yeah, injected.
I bought that, paid through the nose, $2.000 dollars, cash, LOL
It's OK to feel that way about something you've worked hard for and finally achieved.
But Mann is a great company.
If that is a trim piece from the manufacturing process of the metal filter housing, they want to know about it, ASAP.
And why wasn't that picked up at the Ford factory?
Well, when your only job is torquing oil filters to motor blocks, after about a million, you stop looking.

Nah, it's more like finding some oil on the air filter first change in a new house. Is the AC going to fail?? My brother just got his bill for a new AC, $40k! Imeen, might as well sell. Or check the air filter a little more frequently to see if it happens again (and wasn't some careless installer dripping oil on it).

To me it looks like a manufacturing defect in the oil filter. I don't know why you think that's the end of the world; it wasn't coming directly out of the engine block.

I know what it's like to freak out a bit with a new car (I uh have had my moments, door dings be damned!!!). Show a little TLC, keep an eye on it, relax and it'll just be blip you'll soon forget about.

Yeah, seeing that would put a knot in my colon and keep me up at night. After a few weeks something else will pop up--need to schedule brake fluid service, battery replacement, a rattle in back, or a ticking sound (rocks getting ready to be thrown) or am I current with the latest OTA software updates, and I'd forget about it until the next oil change. If you want to keep it, it might make a nice tinsel ornament on a Christmas tree or hang it from the rear-view mirror as a reminder.

The oil flows INTO the outside of the filter, and back into the engine from the center.
That is an oil filter defect.
Hopefully, no other pieces of that crap got into your engine; they look too big to go very far.
If you've got good oil pressure, and no obvious problems/noises, you may just be the luckiest person on this planet.
I would go buy a lotto ticket...fingers crossed...
