IMO - 1st. Don't let your ego put you in a position where you risk damaging your rig or into a scenario where you can't self-extract. 2nd. Always pack a shovel and small/adequite took kit.

Acceleration/de-acceleration is only as good as the tires are

Agreed as tires are an important part of the traction equation and I had pretty aggressive tires

However there aren't tires made that would provide traction on the slope/terrain I was on that time. Once a vehicle started down that section, gravity was getting you to the bottom no matter what other ideas you might have had.

Once I learned to take my time and treat each obstacle with respect, I magically stopped breaking stuff, enjoyed the view and found I could go almost anywhere with a bit of patience.

Inertia can get you up hills and over difficult spots. It's also very good for breaking things and getting you in trouble. If you're in crawler gear things go wrong very slowly.

Two lessons, both depending on the vehicle I am using. First, back in my youth I had a old jeep. It was stricly off road and was held together with duck tape and twine. With that sucker it was balls to the wall. So the the lesson was dont worry, it can be fixed. The second lesson is using my daily driver on the trails. That lesson is Remember Stupid, You Have to Drive this to Work on Monday.
