The bolts that came with the diff had a dry red spot on the threads. Is that not red loctite? Same with the service bolts.
Nope, it's entirely different. Red Loctite is very high strength and typically not removable without lots of heat from a torch.

The stuff pre applied is a low to medium strength. Very unfortunate they chose an already in place, very well known standard color.

@dgorsett There is no contesting that some early adopters had issues with the paint coating. Living in the salt belt only exasperated the underlying rust.

But it wasn't everyone. I was an early adopter and had mine painted to match the Velocity Blue. The existing coating was only scuffed and shot with new paint. Held up fine all these years.

I just picked up my new Ford Performance cover. I am trying something that I learned in the 32 years of building racing engines. That is use a red primer on the inside area. It's function is several things. I helps oil shedding from the surface. It seals the cast iron to help iron particles from coming off and getting in the oil. The sealing also helps to prevent oil from seeping through porosity that may be present.

I am using it to help seal any possible porosity. I feel if oil can slowly seep through the casting (castings can have porosity), once it get to the outer cast surface, it can debond the coating. Even if it does not happen, cleaning the inner cast iron, masking the gasket flange and spraying the primer is an easy job. I used red rust primer.

I installed mine in July '24 and loved it until it started to rust immediately during that 24/25 winter. I finally hit up the Ford Warranty email with pictures and my receipt Monday. I received my replacement today.

Can anyone here who installed a replacement and been through a rustbelt winter confidently say they haven't experienced this same issue?

Nice! Looks like you also have the 'new' one as I do. It's more of a light gray than a silver like the original (which I preferred). Think I'll get this new one PCd in silver after seeing it like this.

Was going to change my Diff oil after we get back from a camping trip next weekend so might as well change out the cover also. Just ordered one. I've really got to stop opening these type discussions :)

I chose to reuse the stock gasket vs. the paper gasket that came with it. I installed both magnetic plugs in the new cover as well.

Did you need longer bolts to work with the stock gasket?

They reused the 4 longer bolts that came with the skid and the rest were new bolts that came with the cover.

I'm not sure if this is allowed - however, if you look at my posts from earlier I purchased this diff cover brand new and it rusted bad. As a result, Ford Performance sent me a new one which I sent to get powder coated. We'll I'm upgrading my Bronco to a Raptor (which uses a different rear diff cover). So I will be selling the brand new powder coated diff cover once I get it back.

It's being powder coated black with sliver letting and silver emblem

So if you're in the market for The Ford Performance did cover, maybe hold off until I list mine in members section to save yourself for the rusting issues.

If this isn't allowed, I'm sorry, I'm honestly just trying to potentially save someone a lot of hassle.
