The bolts that came with the diff had a dry red spot on the threads. Is that not red loctite? Same with the service bolts.
Nope, it's entirely different. Red Loctite is very high strength and typically not removable without lots of heat from a torch.

The stuff pre applied is a low to medium strength. Very unfortunate they chose an already in place, very well known standard color.

@dgorsett There is no contesting that some early adopters had issues with the paint coating. Living in the salt belt only exasperated the underlying rust.

But it wasn't everyone. I was an early adopter and had mine painted to match the Velocity Blue. The existing coating was only scuffed and shot with new paint. Held up fine all these years.

I just picked up my new Ford Performance cover. I am trying something that I learned in the 32 years of building racing engines. That is use a red primer on the inside area. It's function is several things. I helps oil shedding from the surface. It seals the cast iron to help iron particles from coming off and getting in the oil. The sealing also helps to prevent oil from seeping through porosity that may be present.

I am using it to help seal any possible porosity. I feel if oil can slowly seep through the casting (castings can have porosity), once it get to the outer cast surface, it can debond the coating. Even if it does not happen, cleaning the inner cast iron, masking the gasket flange and spraying the primer is an easy job. I used red rust primer.
