FWIW, air filters get more efficient as they load up - for maximum engine protection/cabin freshness, it's actually better to leave them in longer. Probably wouldn't make a measureable difference in engine life either way, though.

In some instances, filters can become more efficient at trapping smaller particles that may otherwise get through more pourous sections of the filter. That is usually only on cheap filters. A good filter with better pore uniformity only gets more restrictive as is captures particles.

Clean filters are inexpensive insurance. My personal maintenance intervals for the engine air filter and cabin air filter are every 10,000 miles.

...and here I was spending 20 minutes carefully trying to open the cabin air filter box from the LEFT the other week A stronger light and reading glasses helped a little.

Those Mass Air Flow Sensor fasteners must be some of the few "regular" Torx in the 2025 Badlands.
Am seriously thinking of changing them to Torx-Plus, if I can, to cut down on the number of tools needed for maintenance.

I thought I'd pass along something I do when changing air filters. I always write the date of the replacement on the new filter with a permanent marker. I can't tell you how many how many up-sells this has prevented, when I point to the date when they say "It looks like it's time to replace this filter."

100% ; my Mother-in-law has a 2018 Escape and that has been my LEAST favorite one thus far.

My Ranger’s is exactly like this write-up with the additional step of removing the damper string.

Great tip on the marker! If you notice in my image the DOM is stamped on the filter so surely someone would look at that and be able to tell it has been less than a year ; but how long that stamp lasts is the question. The stock filter you could barely make it out..

I don’t know about the efficient vs. restrictive argument, but I know the Subaru cabin always smells noticeably fresher after replacing the cabin air filter.

The Bronco cabin never really smells like anything except new fiberglass when the weather is warm.

The Bronco is the first vehicle we've owned that requires tools to replace these filters. Totally crazy that they didn't make the engine air filter hand screws or clips. At least they provided the tools, but still. SMH.

Thanks for the writeup, have always used KN filters, mainly it saves money over the course of a few years. However wont be using them in the Bronco, not messing around with cleaning and oiling them, hoping it wasnt over oiled etc (yep been there). I will miss the NET ZERO HP gain of the KN drop in filter though switching to OEM/conventional (not). It is amazing how air filters used to be 1 wingnut and a steel cover, now its several tools, screws, breakable clips and various plastic pieces. For cabin filter, I have been using Bosch HEPA charcoal filters which have been pretty affordable. They seem to hold up decently on the other vehicles and I believe help with pollen etc.

Now if you can make a detailed and perfect writeup like you just did for the 2.3 oil filter, it could save someone HR increase, BP increase, fine and long cuts on arm, 73 different tools, the need for Flexiril after replacement, and maybe minimize alot of loud words I cannot type out on this forum. I have only performed one oil change (the first at less than 1k miles), hoping the oil filter replacement next time will be easier... Fumoto valve I personally like and now on Bronco (as well as all other vehicles). And I do date all the filters when replacing (great advice Quinn!). Thanks Again Trash Panda!!

Although I always have the step "Vacuum out all the acorn hulls" on mine.

You could replace them with bolts with knobs if you really wanted to. Or throw some threadstock in there and use wingnuts on top. Or just zip tie it on. Lots of ways to get around needing a tool if you really wanted to do so.

The stupid fender clip up front is what bothers me the most, but I haven't got around to replacing it with anything - I just think it feels cheap.

Very impressive write up.

I just did an M190 to M210 FDU swap and was considering doing a detailed write up. This is as far as I have gotten.

1) pull m190
2) drop in m210
3) test drive

All kidding aside. I am just jealous. Very nicely done and this hopefully gives people the confidence to start tackling some of their own maintenance.
