Filson Brand - Not a Good Start

Feeling inspired about the Bronco/Filson co-brand, I decided to buy a new Filson bag for travel. Not knowing much about Filson (never purchased anything from them before), I decided it would be a good thing to try. Unfortunately, the bag strap broke LITERALLY the first time I used it during a trip last week. Super embarrassing too as I was traveling with colleagues for work and the bag suddenly fell to the ground in the airport terminal. The area where the strap attaches to the bag just simply failed. I REALLY hope this isn't a harbinger of bad news for the Bronco partnership. Bronco as a brand is synonymous with toughness and durable design. This bad is anything but that. Fingers crossed y'all

Accurate, statistically. 35% of Filson goods are produced domestically. Probably about the same % as Ford. However:

American made stuff can still be shitty sometimes. Just look at a lot of 80's autos.

Hopefully this is a one off. Like you, I was considering getting a Filson bag to check it out. This makes me a little apprehensive. I usually stick to Tumi stuff - and other than a luggage tag, that stuff has held up like a champ.

I was looking at a bag last week. Just checked the site and it says this for that bag:

Manufacturing
Imported.


Pass.
Edit: I'm looking around their site. It's difficult to find anything that isn't 'imported'. What a let down. It seems like the bags made out of rugged twill are USA made, but not too many others. I might get one of those rugged twill bags, but that's about it.

That is disappointing. I've had a medium rugged twill Filson duffle that I've used often for the past 13 years. It is a very stout piece.

Well, this is the conundrum, right? A company makes stuff overseas, people complain it’s gone downhill. They make it domestically, people complain about the price. Not easy to do business nowadays. Glad I’m retired!

To the OP: definitely complain to them. Like Tumi, their warranty is good.

I recognized the name while at an auction. Picked up probably their largest duffle and a full size garment bag for about $20. They were piled in with a bunch of otherwise junk stuff, sold as a lot .
Looked up the going rate for those pieces and thought the same as you... "Holy (fudge)" !

Their older stuff is absolutely tough as nails, maybe too much so, but i bet it will wear in beautifully!!!
The bridle leather and metal (brass?) hardware is stunning.

I think the issue is when something is marketed as a high end brand just because it's "Made in the USA." There are products made domestically that are still a great price and great quality. I love Lodge Cast Iron cookware. My only issue is that it's at the right price and great quality that I don't need to keep buying their items..but I still do...
