That looks sweet!
I vote with others and keep them as is with no paint.

Before I bought my HE I had a RR base squatch and did similar retro letters. In my opinion red letters looks better on red vehicles if you don’t want the red accent to pop.

I knew I couldn’t be the first to do this. The Red does look great with the Red Bronco.

I was really curious what vehicle the letters are from. You said 1973, which looks to be the 1973 Ford Econoline (1973 F100 used sans-serif letters):

Thanks, I was curious also, and now I know!

I did the same 70ties letters on my ranger tribute. I filled mine in with red vinyl. I think the color all depends on the color of your bronco. I think red fit good with my overall scheme. I like the look of yours as it is.

That looks great! Same letters I think. I looked at your profile for a side view. Your Bronco is amazing!

Bravo!
I think painting the shackles white would really set off your amazing Bronco!

Looks great! I thought about doing this but I figured the ford letters on the gen1 broncos were too small. Never occurred to me to look at other fords. Thanks!

If you know someone with a 3d printer, they're not too hard to come up with what 'look like' Gen 6 lettering:

Has anyone else done this? What do you think? These aren’t from a 1966 Bronco as those are canted and won’t mount flat, instead they are from an unknown truck from 1973 (eBay). My wife says I need to paint the centers red but I’m inclined to leave as is. They have some patina and might look worse with fresh paint. I just couldn’t stand the uninteresting plastic letters that were there from the factory.

You have a lot of options. You could color-match to your body paint. You could do a silver or grey, or you could do a two-tone infill with a different border. Red letters isn't "too much," either. It just depends on what you like. FYI, these are the "default" red letters (factory pre-painted) and Heritage grille:

I love the FORD grille. I went with the same Ford font as the Bronco was. Bought the letters on Etsy and the black painted Badlands type grille came from Buckle up off road. Went together perfectly.

Love it - I did mine this way and the paint has worn off over time but it looks "vintage" and some say they thought it was intentional! I touch it up now and then
