I would like to have an altimeter in my Bronco. Just for fun. Any cool ones (GPS rather than pressure preferred) that mount cleanly in the Bronco, either to an accessory rail (ball) or otherwise?

I admit I've been thinking about one, since OnX doesn't show the elevation on the Airplay map. Most seem to be pressure-based, which... I agree, not preferred.

I have a lot of GPS-phone based apps that can do it, but yeah, kinda looking for a dedicated piece of hardware for it as well.

Watching this.

This is my DIY version of an altimeter:

It's an M5Dial with a GPS module attached (SKU U032-V11). The code was written by Claude Code and uploaded to the device with Arduino IDE. I use the device for other purposes mostly. The mount is a simple laser cut piece of acrylic and tripod mount.

I keep this in my living room, set to standard pressure. It's actually pretty cool watching the altitude change as storms roll in. Actual elevation at my house is 5600.

I recognize this doesn't really address what you're asking for, but it does demonstrate that mechanical altimeters can be off by up to about 500 feet in either direction if you don't plug in the true current barometric pressure. GPS is definitely better for both mounting options and accuracy.

GPS Status app works well. Don't know if there is an Apple version but works well on Android.
It also gives you speed and GPS location and a bunch of other info.

This is the piece .... I .... MUST .... HAVE !!!!
LOL!
May not be the ideal thing in a 6G, but that shit is certainly going in the EB .... someday.

As for accuracy, ehhh , probably only matters in OV-10 Broncos more so than ours.

Hey if an analog pressure altimeter is accurate enough for in-flight aircraft separation, it’s good enough for a Bronco on the trail.
Any smartphone weather app will give you the atmospheric pressure in Inches of Mercury (inHg) of the nearest weather station (QNH in aviation terms). Dial that into your analog altimeter’s Kollsman window, the small, adjustable barometric pressure subscale (display window) on the altimeter before any adventure and you are good to go with fairly accurate altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL) readings.

You can also set it if you know how high you are when you start (like your house). Set your altitude/elevation and it will tell you atmospheric pressure.

I'd say either pick up an old one on Etsy or eBay and 3D print a case for it, or make one with an Arduino and 3D print a case for it. Had I had time...
