It amazes me how so many people point out all the problems with CA. Every state has problems, some address them and some don't. CA addressed smog because it was so bad especially in SoCal in the LA basin. That initiated the CA auto emissions requirements. That did eventually end up being used nation wide. That has helped reduce smog in CA as well as many cities with that problem. I don't know about everybody else, but I like breathing cleaner air and don't mind the cost to have it.

I suppose CA should have been blamed for creating smog.

I am not native Californian, but have been here since 1969 and don't see any reason to leave. There are things I don't like about it but more that I do like. Why move to another place that also has things that I don't like. To each his own.

Do I want low rolling resistance tires? No, but I will adapt if need be and leave being concerned to bigger issues.

That is not what the commission said.

Just to correct the facts, the CEC $79 savings estimate is a NET savings that includes the added cost of tire. However, that $79 savings is realized over the 4-year life of the tire, not per year, and the tire industry strongly disagrees with the small price increase that the CEC used.

This is clearly an initiative to reduce total energy consumption and pollution, a good goal especially in urban areas, but I think it’s a mistake to try to sell it as a cost savings for consumers.
So the figures (as most things CA .gov puts out) are fabricated BS.

Aside from the costs to the manufacturer for the materials and construction, there WILL be the mandated testing procedures the State will require the tire companies to foot the bill for to get their approval (just as CA requires gun makers to pay for the privilege of selling their pistols in the state) to say nothing of the cost of the added bureaucracy they will have to create. Tire Czar anyone?

You add a Schrader valve.

A real Jerry can is formidable monster of a can.

My modern cans are are great once you add a vent.
Auto shut off
Auto close with no drip.
Great handles
See through enough to tell fuel level.

Signed,
I know what
USMC generally means
And what
20L Designates.

ps
Lawsuits far more than govt intervention are the reason for gas can evolution.
It wasn't law suits...it was a Federal mandate from the EPA that changed gas cans.

And having to add things to return functionality to a product means that product is no longer functional in its present as sold form. Outside of narrow uses the new nozzles spill more gas than the old cans ever did.

Just remember... California gasoline was only supposed to cost approximately ten cents more than gasoline in the other states. That was the sales pitch years ago.

I paid $5.39 per gallon a few days ago. You boys and girls in the other states averaging $5.29 per gallon I assume?
its $3.39 by me. not to mention everything is cheaper COL than stupid land CA that stuffs regs that acutally increase costs.

There are few things I can't improve upon.
Most folks here don't drive stock/unchanged broncos.

If you have added so much as a tire change or a steering wheel cover or adjusted tire pressure to enhance performance/suitability, what does that say of bronco functionality?

The Schrader enhances functionality to suit a personal need. I serve ME if I can.
It does not return functionality. It enhances functionality.

I use those tanks multiple times a week. They work brilliantly once the valve is added.
I haven't used a Jerry can in decades.

I concede about the legislation.
I was wrong.
The lawsuits changed the federal laws with that 'unburned child'(or whatever the statute is called). The epa bandwagon'd.

My shrader valve post was for educational purposes only.
If no one wants to improve the tanks performance, I'm entirely ok with that.

The valve RETURNS functionality as pre CARB/EPA mandates gas cans all had vents. The little yellow cap you unsnapped.

Costs a few bucks, but restores plastic gas jugs to their 1970's functionality - with flexible spouts and vents.

Or, you could just complain that not enough was done for you in the initial.
A few bucks to eliminate what is surely a vexxing.

They don't work as good as the originals. Tried adding one and the vent doesn't seal as well as the original factory versions. They have to make the hole loser in order for a person (not a machine) to be able to pop them in.

The nozzles do a good job at replacing the unholly contraptions cans come with now days though.

On the plus side, you're not breathing this air anymore:
My point was that they always estimate wrong, and in the price of gas case it was a 10x error to the negative.

Also... your picture was based on cars that were REALLY fuel inefficient.

I'd like to see "their" calculations, and the degree levels of the people that made those decisions, and what formulas were used in their calculations.

I'd guess... also that "their" calculations were based on maxing out tire pressure... which of course could be done today, as there is never any push concerning tire pressure.

And don't get me started on how bad the roads here are, or why there are diamond lanes anymore. They CLEARLY add to pollution. And for that matter... why are they adding "Express" lanes for a price if CA is so concerned.

Its all just bull. I'm sure this post will be flagged as political, but it really is not.

Those fuel blends started being used in the late 80s or early 90s no? When a 10 cent difference would be about a 10-20% difference in cost.. like it is today. No?

Well, the price of gasoline in 1988 was 0.88 cents a gallon. So adding "10 cents" would make it an uplift of 11%.

National average on gasoline is $4.10. If you multiply by 1.11 you get $4.55

Average price in CA right now is $5.588.

The actual price is hard to calculate going back to 1988 though, because if you use the current method of inflation (not the shadowstats method) you'd only get $2.40 for the price of gas nationally.

But using the normalized stats... we're still over a $1.03 over the stated "10%".

Head starting to hurt doing this stuff though...

There are a lot of things that have affected the price of CA gas since 1988, not just the special blend gas they started requiring. Everything from taxes to a massive population/demand increase.
