I had my Bronco in for an oil change and tire rotation this week. At my last oil change/rotate in October, they "did" the recall and determined my shocks were not leaking and did not need to be replaced, and just put the plastic retainers on them.

This time, the shocks were recommended to be at a cost of around $1024. I turned it down, not thinking about it, and realized on my way home that it should have been covered by the recall. Checking the shocks, the passenger is coated in black grime that could not possibly have accumulated in 5 months. The driver side has a little bit of seepage, but not much.

Has anyone else had this happen, and did the dealer end up replacing under the recall? I will be back this week to push them on it a bit.

Equally concerning is the outrageous price - the parts from Ford are $180 each, so how exactly is it $600 of labor to swap rear shocks? I haven't left feedback for them yet, will wait until I can stop to ask about the recall.

That sucks…

If they are out of warranty - you are screwed. Once they do the recall and flag it complete, it’s a done deal. Time to pay for an upgrade imo.

But if you are still in your warranty period they should get covered under that - recall or otherwise

That recall wasn’t really to keep them
from leaking — it was more about keeping the reservoir from falling off and becoming a missile hazard on the highway.

^This
Nothing in the recall really prevents them from leaking in the future, nor was it designed to unfortunately.
Since it was already completed when they weren’t leaking, the recall is no longer valid for a repair in this situation.

Also just to clarify the cost issue, the MSRP of the shocks from Ford are about $290 each.

Sure you can find them cheaper online, but that’s at wholesale pricing which a dealership isn’t going to sell them for normally. They’re in the business of making money at the end of the day.

$600 labor is not unreasonable considering they need to swap springs. Consider some from classifieds with springs or Bilstein 5100 other wise splurge on the Fox 2.5 Elites on classifieds now with springs.

My extended warranty through FORD covered replacing mine a year ago. I had almost 50k miles on them.
I just replaced with HOSS 3.0. I will be glad to sell my replacement ones for $200. No idea what shipping would cost

Think you got lucky because the information in the system at the time was incorrect. Ford has now changed the coverage information for ESP.

This is what it used to say: (Ignore where it says front shock that’s just a mistake- 18125 is the basic part number for rear)

Yep, I checked my ESP agreement and the shocks are explicitly not covered there either.

A lot of stuff not covered by ESP IMO they are a rip off and massive profit center.

So many take off and recycled parts plus aftermarket avail everywhere.....

This is exactly why I haven't had this recall completed yet ... but also, I don't want it to get to the point where I am a danger to others on the road. What should we be looking for that is a shock that can/should be replaced ... not just patched with the "craft time" with Ford fix?

I brought my Bronco to the dealer for this recall, expecting they’d carry out the remedy. After about an hour, I got a call saying the vehicle was ready. The service rep told me no work was required because I supposedly have the short flange.

That’s incorrect. When I checked my shocks afterwards, they hadn’t even been cleaned for inspection. They were still covered in months-old dirt. That alone raises concerns about whether any proper inspection was actually done.

I spoke with the manager, who I’ve had a good relationship with until now. They apologised and mentioned they were referencing an older bulletin and that the one I provided was released this year. Which isn’t accurate, as I’ve had that bulletin since last year.

At best, this feels careless. At worst, it raises serious concerns about how this recall is being handled.

As a [”sorry we f’ed up”] courtesy, they’ve offered to replace my shocks with new ones and let me keep the old ones as spares.

Before I agree, I want to know how the new replacement set from this recall should look like, so I don't end up with another error on their end.

@Ducati1098 would love your insights.

Thanks guys!

The replacements have the short flange.
That’s the only one they can possibly order, so they can’t mess it up. Long flange ones are obsolete.
