Ok I am posting so others can reference if they want to service themselves. 2.3 auto w/vacuum boost brakes. The rear has no brake service mode for the DIY person like the 2.7 electric has.

Park Bronco, make it safe. Parking brake off. Battery stays connected, Bronco turned off.
(All safety stuff first, chock wheels jack stands, etc)

First 3 steps pics below.
Remove rear wheels and disconnect the parking brake actuator plug.
Remove parking brake motor, 2 Allen bolts.
Rotate the torx bolt (t55 I think) 360 clockwise, just 1 complete turn. By hand no wrench needs to be attached to the Torx bit.

Remove caliper, remove pads and replace clips and pads.
Retract the piston. No tools needed. Push in piston with your hand, it will go a little and stop. When it stops rotate the torx 360 again. Push in piston unt it stops, repeat until it’s fully retracted. If Torx no longer turns by hand. Reverse counter clockwise direction 360, repeat until piston is retracted. Took me about 5 rotations of pushing.
I needed to open the bleeder nut a little. You do whatever you do when you bleed brakes.

Once it’s retracted Reinstall caliper, brake motor and plug it back in. Torque to spec, and reinstall tires and make ready to drive. Start Bronco and bleed brakes as needed.

First time I engaged the parking brake it threw an error and said service parking brakes. I clicked ok and once cleared I drove around tested the normal brake operation. Turned it off engaged parking brake a 2nd time and it operated normally with no error.
I think it just needed to wind that Torx screw more than one operation of the brake engagement provided.

If someone sees I missed a step or knows better let me know. This is what I found to work for me this evening.

I had 23k on these rear pads.
Front look like I can get another 15k out of them.
Also a pic of the motor taken off.

If anyone knows what’s going on inside the caliper when you turn that Torx please share id like to know and not just guess. Best I can tell it just allows allows a bit of fluid to move through to release pressure.

You can enter Brake Service mode on the 2.3
using either Forscan or FDRS and not have to monkey with the parking brake.

The Torx thing is manually retracting the parking brake all the way to the backstop so you can compress the caliper for the new pads.

A bunch of us suckers don’t have forscan or fdrs, this is the poor man special I guess.

The Torx does not retract the piston you have to physically push it with some force, and no matter if you turn it one time or 2 it only goes a little you can’t just push it all the way in with one go. In my experience this evening.

Is this just a manual thing only or a ‘21?
I will have to give it a try as many others here have found it does not work.
I think it only worked on the MY21 and they broke it on the subsequent 2.3s

I don’t know if they fixed it with the MY25 and it’s EBB or not.

It’s worth a shot though - doesn’t cost anything but some time

Getting into DIY brake service mode is a problem for several Ford models, some just randomly do not work. And Ford has no fix or answer for it. Really annoying.... 🤬

What year is yours? I'm guessing 2021?
Yes.

When I first attempted it, it did not work. It is a cluster f##k to get it to work, kinda like rubbing your tummy and tapping your head at the same time...🤣

I needed to open the bleeder nut a little, had a hose attached connected to a large syringe to keep it a closed clean system. You do whatever you do when you bleed breaks.

I'm not trying to be picky but for bra
ke search most people will search brake instead of break.

What is the scenario where that would be needed, it seems like a pad change should not introduce air into the system?
You needed to bleed your brakes when doing a brake job on drum brakes, not needed for disk brakes.
