A question for folks:
When I got home, my Bronco had a really bad stink! It was from the mud. 'like rotting old sewer and garbage.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Maybe it's from the rotten people at the "campsites" along the forest road leaving garbage and overturned toilet buckets.

Yes, I experienced this at Ford‘s Michigan Proving Grounds in Romeo MI. There’s a grassy/muddy two-track trail and during certain wet times of the year, the earth there would stink horribly as you described. I assumed it was heavy with organic material in natural decay. Definitely natural whatever the cause. The mud was extremely slick when wet like axle grease, and it stuck to everything like concrete. It was very difficult to wash off and made the trucks smell like dog $#@!

A lot of mud holes are damn foul.

You are likely smelling bacteria. Nearly all standing water and mud is loaded with it and it produces a lot of foul smelling gases. There’s a swamp where I hunted ducks growing up in PA that smelled a lot like pig shlt but no pigs had ever been around. It was gnarly. Ducks loved it — I don’t think they can smell.

I've never smelled it bad like this past Tuesday, and was wondering if I should avoid all wet trails up here in the Pacific Northwest. (am more familiar with the desert trail conditions)
