Recently had a tire rotation done. Returned to the tire shop after 100 miles to have lug nuts re-torqued. Technician torquing the lug nuts mistakenly torqued the first wheel to 150 ft-lbs before realizing it should only be 100 ft-lbs. He loosed the lug nuts then torqued to 100 ft-lbs. Should I be worried that the wheel studs are damaged?

Im honestly surprised its only 100. I was thinking 120 at least. 150 just gonna make it harder on the next guy and hope its not you changing a flat.

I didn't think you were supposed to use any kind of stuff on lug nuts

neolube - there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. That stuff is awesome

The anti-seize is good for when your steel lug nut will slide on your aluminum rim as you tighten/torque it to prevent galling. Neolube ensures your torque is accurate for the clamping force the bolt exerts on the wheel to the hub and not just overcoming bolt/nut friction.

You must careful about putting lubricants on lug nuts or any kind of threaded fastener. Ford specifically indicates not to use a lubricant on lug nuts. The lower friction of the lube creates more tensile stress in the stud. 100 ft-lb torque with lube can give the same tension as 150 ft-lb dry depending on how slippery the lube is.

Lubricants typically give more consistent tension but when lubes are used, a torque-tension test must be done to determine the proper torque to achieve the correct tension.

My company makes dry film lubricants for the Aerospace industry. Occasionally, we get nuts from a company that randomly decided to have them coated with dry film lubricant to eliminate galling. Their engineers did not take into the account it would increase tension in the bolt. Then we get complaints from the company that they are breaking bolts when they torque them. We try to catch these kind of orders before it becomes a problem, but sometimes they slip though.

A torque video. Lubricant increases torque.

False. (I didn't watch the video, but your words).

If you want the same bolt tension, lubed will need a lower torque. Conversely a lubed fastener at the same torque causes more bolt tension.
