People who have and use the train air horns to scare people are a&^holes of the utmost kind. There is no need for those horns at all...but you do you, boo.
Yupper and a great way in today’s crazy world to start a road rage incident, in fact I have witnessed one, scared the hell out of a very small baby , and resulted in a nasty bleeding face and the police…. Think folks before you act, not everyone will see the humor you do

A true train horn is WAY too loud. Trust me. But on the other hand, having fun with a smaller air horn (motorcycle size) might be appropriate.

I went with the 12V speaker route with the horse neigh sound. Now that’s kick ass, cause after the a hole cuts you off and you’re behind or next to him at the next light, you can winnie the hell out of him. That’s way more fun for revenge.

If I wanted to wake someone up, I'd rather have a horn that sounded like a semi.

It's not about scaring people - it's about other people having respect for the road and the other drivers around them. If people are too stupid to connect their phones via bluetooth and insist on driving with headphones on (usually both of them) then it is in my own interests to ensure that if and when they create a dangerous situation from careless driving that has a direct impact to my safety - I'd like to be heard over their phone, music - whatever.

Its in your own best interest to avoid stupid, and not become stupid

Or you could just back off a bit with that self-centered person who cut you off. Realize that blasting a horn that scares uninvolved people is a dick move. Let the stress go, get off that multi lane highway, and enjoy a more scenic route.

I am not standing on a pedestal looking down, just looking back on a youth of my own and seeing all my dick moves because I felt disrespected, or whatever it's called for being emotional these days.

Go offroad and get away from the hustle and bustle in DFW. I'm sure there are a ton of cool placed between you and Wichita falls.
One time when I was young I had a damaged door that wouldn't close all the way. I tied a rope to make sure it didn't open while driving, until the appointment day to fix it arrived a few days later. In the meantime people tried to alert me to the not-closed door by honking their horns and I can't really blame them for that. They were honestly trying to help.

However, one car had some sort of extremely loud aftermarket horn that didn't even sound like an auto horn. When they used it to 'help' me I was so startled that I almost lost control. It was like 'what in the f***ing h*** was that... am I in danger?' That was not cool.

Pros:
  • Very loud, gets people's attention
  • Great for scaring deer away from the road at night (see one, blast it, they all avoid you)
  • Prank potential for people who appreciate a good prank (not random people in public, they hate it)

Cons:
  • Very loud, gets people's attention (often the bad kind)
  • If you use it in traffic, it will likely illicit an anger response from whomever it was intended for- much more so than the regular 12v horn
  • Potential for "scare factor" unintended response from nearby drivers (example: You blast it at some fool on the road, they panic, jerk the wheel or hit the brakes, make the situation worse)

I bought one for a family member as a gift 9 years ago- full system with a compressor, tank, and 4 horns. It was painfully loud. Fun to install, novelty item, but the unintended consequences of its use became so noticeable that they stopped using it and eventually uninstalled it.

I considered adding one to my Bronco because SC drivers have learned to tune out horns and are often on the wrong side of the road. Except, everyone carries here, including people who shouldn't. There are enough GSW road-rage cases around here to indicate "lay low and avoid." I have several friends who work at nearby hospital systems and police departments- it's a rampant issue around here. Blast a super loud horn at the wrong Altima, and you might wind up perforated.

If you do get a train horn, be aware of unintended consequences of its use. I would actually recommend a MotoHorn setup instead- it's much louder than a regular horn but not "everyone in a 1mi radius will hate me" loud.
