I also 100% recommend the Wolfbox 4000A jump starter. Their customer service is outstanding.

Three ways to test really, depending on how thorough you want to be with it.

You bring up the first - using it on a dead battery. I don't know that I recommend draining your battery down just to test your jump starter, but it's certainly possible and easy to do if you wanted to. This will absolutely test your unit and make sure it can jump start your engine.

A lesser method - just hook it up to your battery even if it isn't dead. Most of these units, either they work, or they are completely dead and won't do anything - not really any in-between. So if it turns on and goes through all the motions on a good battery, it'll most likely also jump a dead battery.

The easiest method - going with the fact that these things either work great, or are completely dead - so long as it turns on and you can use the flashlight or power bank or whatever else is built into it, it's probably just fine as a jump starter too.
Just watched a YouTube video where the guy tested out a Wolfbox starter by disconnecting the car battery (positive terminal) and hooking it to just the cable. Didn't work at first but then he switched the charger to "boost" it started right up.

I bought a NOCO Boost.

They had a special deal on them several years ago awhile back on Ford Accessories. Admittedly I just kinda bought it on a limb to reach the number to hit free shipping. Didn't do much research ahead of time.

BUT I've used it a ton to jump start my Bronco, my lawnmower, my wife's Escape, my neighbors SuperDuty, etc. etc. Been awesome so far.
Do light flicker when you enter the room? Cats hiss when you walk by? No need for a flashlight at night? You might want to check your personal electromagnetism, something might be off.

I have 2 NOCO boosters. One for my Bronco, one for my diesel truck. I also have a Hulkman jumper that I share with my boat and Subaru. Both are great jumpers. No problems with either brand.

Well just got the NOCO GB150. This thing is too big for me. Hoping I could carry it on a motorcycle but not a chance. Also I have no way of charging it as it takes a USB C I believe & no wall charger. I will be be returning to Amazon and looking for a more compact but capable unit 🙁

The 150 is overkill for what you really need. You could get away with a 25 or 40. Something that is around 1000A starting.

I have this one from Amazon. Have not personally needed it, but I have jumped other cars with ease. I can keep this in my Bronco for months and the battery is still 90% charged. After a jump it loses about 15% of battery (don't buy the 60 jumps per charge they say) so I recharge after that or every six months or so to play it safe. It says $199 for the 2000A when not logged-in to Amazon. Logged-in to my Amazon account it lists 2000A for $119 and that's what I got it for. I am also a very heavy Amazon user so your mileage may vary on price.

any reason not to get a 6000A over a 4000A over a 2500A current model?

also, are any of them American made? i believe in supporting American products first.
NOCO is out of Ohio, but I believe the jump starters are Taiwan? I have a GB 40 a GB 150 and a couple of their 2amp trickle chargers. They all function well. Probably as close to USA you will get.
Project farm on YouTube just did a review of portable jump starters. It's a good watch.

Another vote for the NOCO Boost packs.
I got a GB70 for my boat in 2017 and haven't had any issues with it, it always just works.
Added another GB70 for my wife's car in 2019 and I got a GBX75 in 2022 for my car.

Just don't pay full price for one. They go on sale all the time. I got my GBX75 for under $170.

I have a NOCO GBX155. I went with a little larger unit to be able to handle starting my 6.7L Powerstroke in a NW Montana winter. So far I have only used to to charge phones and laptops during a power outage.
