Manual, 2DR, VB Badlands -- resell trap?

Hey all --

I am currently in the market for a Bronco. It's going to be a weekender toy. It's only gunna hit pavement for weekend drives and hopefully most of the time just to get to the trail. But, I am not yet skilled enough for high technical trails with things like rock crawling or water fording, etc. and I'll be honest and admit that I probably don't have the risk tolerance for super technical trails anyway.

What I am looking at getting is a 2DR Badlands with a manual and the lux package, because I love manuals but I also love creature comforts. I don't plan to do sasquatch because the Badlands has most of that and is equipped well above my skill level/risk tolerance already.

I've noted that this configuration basically does not exist anywhere near me despite being near world class offroading (Colorado Rockies). The only 2DR manual within a 100 miles of me is at the dealer only because someone ordered it (hah). It's also "just" a black diamond. Even 2DR autos are pretty rare near me.

My original plan was to get a lower trim, because I will never fully utilize the offroad capability, but Ford decided to only put the high creature comforts on the high end offroad and/or 4DR models.

My plan is to keep it for only 3-5 years and then sell, but I am worried this configuration is going to be a bear to resell for a decent price. High end 4x4, manual with lots of creature comforts. What do you all think?

What I think is if you are thinking of selling it before you even buy it, you probably shouldn't be buying it unless it's pocket change money to you.

Maybe just lease it and give it back.

Buy what you want. The resale value isn’t going to differ that much either way.

A completely different type of car example but once Ferrari stopped making manual transmission cars, the value of used manuals has far outpaced the paddle shifting automatics.

It's a toy, and it's well within my means but I also don't want to get totally slagged on it if I do end up selling it that soon.

Also meant to say a lease is a good idea, I can run the numbers on that. But I would assume Ford would not be too happy with me doing any permanent mods to a lease?

My old Cyber Orange 2dr Lux Badlands, SAS, manual only sat on the dealers used car lot for about two or three weeks after I traded it in. Some of that time was waiting for the title to get changed over.
Stickered at 54k, they listed it for 50k, don't know what they got for it. That was in March of this year.

I'd guess that if it VB instead of CO it would have sold faster.

You can lease it. Ford's Red Carpet Lease evaluates your vehicle at lease end and permanent mods don't void the lease. It will be assessed like a used vehicle and if you devalued the vehicle with the permanent modifications, then you may have to pony up the difference. That's the major risk you take, but as long as you're not putting it through stupid mods it should be fine.

When I was looking for a 2 Dr Manual - they basically only existed if you special ordered them. I could get either a 2Dr, or 7MT, but not both on a lot. I chose the 7MT. I was looking for a 2Dr MT BD - too bad I don't live near @RagnarKon

It's always hard to predict what the market is going to do, especially following covid and particularly with used cars... But if Jeeps are anything to look at - those have traditionally held resale value very well. I think, baring Ford doing something spectacularly stupid (which is possible), or the economy doing something incredibly bad - the resale value for Broncos right now is mostly beating Jeeps, so I think that says a bit. I don't think configuration plays too much into it.

That's the configuration I bought. Paid 46k new in Feb 22, a recent carvana offer was 28k. I think I could probably get 35k pretty easily on the open market.

Heh, reason why I asked him is because a 2-door manual is what I really want. Just can’t reasonably fit it into my life until the kids are older.

But I won’t lie, I spend an unreasonable amount of time looking at totaled 2-door manual Broncos that have hit auctions. Ya know… just in case one pops up that wouldn’t cost a fortune to repair.

I got my unicorn last year - Badlands, 2D, MT, Mid Pack, Non-Sas in either Eruption Green or Velocity Blue. It was on the lot in Boise and took 3 months of negotiating to get the deal I wanted.

I don't care if anyone else wants to buy it, they can't have it.

That coin has two sides as well....

Just like you REALLY want that build, come resale time, post it on national markets like cars.com and your buyer will find you.

My neighbor had a manual Acura sedan for sale. It didn't take long.
His buyer moved very quickly to close the sale and drove a fair amount to get there because it was "The One" he had been looking for, the rare six speed manual..... Priced at a fair market price, the guy didn't haggle because he wanted THAT car and wasn't going to risk losing out on it.


If you get in a hurry, you MIGHT have to take a hit , otherwise the value pretty much holds the same as an auto.
It's really a matter of finding the buyer.

For resale get the automatic since many more potential buyers can operate. And maybe a monochrome color as those also seem popular. Also buy a lower cost version that holds resale better, you don't need Badlands for what you'll be doing. Paying for extras based on supposed resale value is typically not the ticket.

I don't get the idea of buying new vehicles and selling them after only a few years though, when typically (non-covid anomaly) you take the largest devalue hit. I've bought all my vehicles based on fun and functionality, so they meet my needs a long time. By base 2-door manual has been a great fit, the last Carvana valuation was still around 7k more than I spent, and I'll probably hang onto it like grim death until it or I don't run anymore.
