Are these really made by Bilstein or is it just Bilstein's design and name and manufactured by the cheapest supplier in China like the B&O sound system?

So it appears the rears are the only ones developing this issue, maybe the "protective" cover is causing the road grime and salt, etc to collect around the reservoir, contributing to the premature rust/failure?

The front shocks also have remote reservoirs but don't have a cover, and I don't recall seeing any posts regarding failure of the front shocks.

Thoughts?

I just can’t believe these reservoirs are held on by essentially nothing 2 small tabs and paint better off not having them ! Just poor design!

I feel the same way although probably not China they build better than this. Sent from my iPhone ( built in China)

As par for the course with me I find this stuff a bit late and did not read all the responses but here is my take.

Bilstien ā€œyellowsā€ are the starter shock from them, 4600 series. The 6100s with their shiny silver finish might be great for yous in warm weather climates but for those in the ā€œrust beltā€ will find that the finish will deteriorate in a few short years. When this first happen to customers, who I sold them to, I called Bilstien and was immediately asked ā€œWhere do you live? Oh yeah no warranty on shocks from the rust belt. That shit they use on the roads voids the finish warranty.ā€

I still sell many of them (6100s) today but I just inform the customer what to expect.

Shit happens. That is why you save your pennies and bite the bullet, buy quality coilovers that are rebuildable.

I also agree with the some of the early responses, any OEM shock is the bare minimum in quality. Fox 3.0 OEM shocks and no where near the same as Fox performance series shocks, but yet are the same 2.5ā€ body shock design, just made at a lower price point.

Most recent reservoir failure. Expect to see more and more of these incidents especially by those that live up north. @zombie was fortunate to have them covered under warranty. Good luck on your claim.
I expect to get covered did they replace all 4?

You'll have to ask @zombie . But why would Ford replace all 4? Have all 4 fallen off? Are you expecting the dealer to replace an item that they won't get paid by Ford to do?

For typically isn't covering them as they'll claim that the reservoir came off due to it impacting something.

I've been running shock skids since day 1 but I suspect that the fluid has completed leaked out of at least my driver rear shock.

I expect to get covered did they replace all 4?

They replaced the 2 rear shocks that failed only. I would never have expected them to prematurely replace something that hasn't failed.
