Started hearing a rattle under the engine lately after start up. Seems to go away after driving but can hear it when letting off gas. No CEL or any change in vehicle performance. I researched on here and I’ve read everything from cam phasers to normal. Taking into the dealer on Saturday to see.

Anyone else experience this ?

I know a lot of 4cyl have a lot of wastegate rattle, but I hadn't heard of any 2.7's really complaining of that - it doesn't hurt anything other than making the noise when the engine is cold. One guy had a video of it here somewhere, and he could stick his finger on the wastegate actuator and make it stop.

Thanks !

Do you know if the dealership ever replaces that part as a result of this or does it depend? I do get occasional delay from the turbos although I've read that too can be normal but also could be a result of the wastegate issue.

Most I see are being told it’s “normal”

I've got the 2.7 that has a slight metallic rattle at low RPM under partial throttle.
Been meaning to pinpoint it, but never really think about it.
You can only hear it with the windows down or door off, and it only lasts for a second or two is speed and RPMs increase.

We recently purchased a 24 OBX with the 2.7 and the death rattle started at 495 miles. Took it in and was told it’s a cam phaser issue and Ford is aware of the problem and parts were ordered to repair. It’s been in the shop all week and hopefully will be done by this afternoon. It is quite worrisome to have this occur on a brand new vehicle!

Yes I have to say that my rattle is not as loud as those with the cam phaser issue - at least when comparing videos of the cam phaser to my rattle. I HOPE its not cam phaser and its just wastegate but who knows. I can say the rattle I have started maybe a week ago - I am at 11K miles.

Cam phaser rattle typically only happens in the first 2-3 seconds of a cold start. So if you’re hearing it while driving it’s likely something else.

Sounds like the same exact issue I have as well. It was something I recently heard as "new" so getting it checked that it's not something more than just normal noise. Will posted back on findings!

I seem to remember either a TSB or Special Service Message about waste gate linkage being loose and rattling. Minor issue with an easy fix. It’s probably not cam phasers, they are normally heard on startup only and only for a few seconds.

So just to be clear I don't believe I hear it on startup and I also believe it happens all the time. Not just shortly after cold start.
Pretty sure I can replicate it pretty much anytime I want to under the right conditions, which again I think is just partial throttle at low RPM.
I will hear it under acceleration from a stop. But I've also heard it while cruising down a trail at low speed (10-20) mph and applying light throttle.

Based on that description, I’m guessing watergate rod. Take it to dealer, make sure service advisor or someone hears the exact noise you are hearing. If they don’t hear it themselves, your odds of a successful repair go down significantly.

Hello! Could you privately message us with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer so I can look into this rattle concern? Thank you!

That's what I'm thinking. I'm from Volkswagen world where rattling wastegates have been around for a while, and that's exactly what this seems like lol.
