74Weld Bronco Portals now available!

Damn that Quinn is a down to earth guy that loves what he is doing... Had an hour long convo with him this morning. Background: I have taught a few entry level gear design classes at the post secondary level.... Great conversation and let me assure you he KNOWS his stuff.

Already knew there was no way I wanted to go with Tibus.... those helical gears require very specific bearings to counter the axial thrust. I do not think Wolfgang accounts for that properly. Just my opinion and you are more than free to disagree..... I looked hard at the werewolf portals because they are straight cut gears and the bearing design is much simpler and does not have the axial loading to account for.

My other reason for moving toward 74 Weld is that they are WAY lighter than either of the other two... Rather than cast iron Quinn is using 7470 Aluminum for the housing.... This is huge advantage as speed increases.... Unsprung weight is something to be avoided because of momentum..... The more unsprung you have the harder the shocks have to work to change the direction (or suppress the momentum if you will).

I didn't even talk to Quinn about that issue... Yea after talking with him I put some money down....

Yeah, but does he test his products by putting a Bronco on its roof? If not I'm not interested...

Just to elaborate on Quinn and the stuff he builds/sells.

He said he had just serviced a Trophy Trucks (I forget the driver) set of uprights, the part that holds the portal, He had wrecked the truck 2 years prior which had torn off the lower control arm. Quinn re-bushed the mounting point and put them back in service. Still working fine. Still holding up. The guy has used the same uprights since he purchased them new from Quinn 4 years ago.

That is what I have always said.

Not sure I follow, I don't remember setting any rules, but ok. Did I miss something??? I do have "blonde" moments occasionally.

Just to elaborate on Quinn and the stuff he builds/sells.

They talked extensively about Loren Healy being the hardest of hard on equipment in the Portal Talk video and I think they also joke about it on the 2023 KOH Recap video.

I assume you're joking about he-who-will-not-be-named, but actually the KOH video does show some top-down testing... lol

Here is another issue to consider IF... you are comparing Tibus, Werewolf and 74 weld.... I am unaware of any others available for the bronco at this time.... but, I did discuss with Quinn about the knuckle he is replacing. I like that design he has. I think it VASTLY improves the knuckle strength. I recently ripped a knuckle in half... long story on an entirely different vehicle but it is a concern for me since I have recently experienced literally "breaking" a knuckle in half. I know... very very rare... but I am special, I do weird things.

Both the Tibus and Werewolf bolt directly on to the existing knuckle... That is going to create huge forces on the knuckle that is was not designed and manufactured to withstand. Quinn has designed his specifically to withstand these additional pressures.

Damn and his "kit" has everything! 31 spline axles converting the rear to a full floater, new disks Larger because of the caliper relocation, even has the extended brake lines.... I mean everything!

Actually I have not seen.... will not have a Bronco until next week... or if I am lucky this weekend, It is a bit unusual to break a knuckle... But again... a concern that hits home for me.
