No kidding! I would like 40's ("foties"), but I wonder if the 2.3 could spin those well enough. Definitely couldn't get them in my garage (after the 3.8/3.5 lift I got maybe 2.5", hard to measure). So probably looking at 37's when I can afford them. But maybe the regear brings 39's into the 2.3 repertoire?

Well I did say "most". My local dealer sold theirs for just 5K over.

The portals (74Welds...other brands may be different) turn 1.22/1. What this means it it compounds the axle ratio by 22%...ie a 4.70 gear becomes effectively a 5.73. In my case that's about perfect for what I want...by way of comparison a 5.38 becomes 6.56...that's about the same as a Rockwell, and beyond what I would consider for street use. Quinn chose this ratio based on the fact that he assumed most users would choose a 22% larger diameter tire, so 35 stock becomes 42-43...however for better streetability I plan to downsize to 40s (geez...DOWNSIZING to 40s? What a time to be alive!)

So really 4.46 (non sas badlands) saves 3500 or so for sas and you can apply that to portals putting lift and rehear around 17000 and now you have optimum gears for 40’s…. Or at 5.44 I think optimum

That reminds me of this guy I knew in high school, John Chandler. His dad bought him a 1974 Ford Ranger when he was like five as a project truck. Over the years they would work on it, until in high school he had this cherry white and orange truck with white interior, and most importantly, a 427 small block with (blah blah don't remember). It was really sweet! Made me want Michelin LTX's real bad.

That thing was also dangerous, it was so fast to 60 mph it'd put you back in your seat, but it only went 85 or something. When I asked why, he said it was geared real low.

He was goofing around one day out on a backroad in east Houston and the king bolt worked out and he wrecked it, and his mother insisted he get a new Ranger (95 extended). He still drove it like a nut but it was never the same.

Not to mention the Tibus portals are 5.5"s of lift vs 74weld are 3.88, that's 1.62"s. Not sure what the overall width difference is, but that could also play a factor. 74weld comes as a replacement knuckle whereas Tibus uses the stock knuckle. There are a lof of variables depending on what the end user wants. Both have a 1.22 reduction as well.

I'm not a brand-loyal person, and I have Tyler's steering rack upgrades which I think are great insurance to have. If I were to choose portals right now I'd probably go with 74weld, but for spending that much money I'd like to see the long-term results of both sets of portals.

It also sucks if you have already invested in coil overs to provide lift, and now the aftermarket will have to make coil overs to match the stock Sasquatch height if you don't want a ton of lift.

The portals have a 1.22 gear reduction.

You cannot put anything lower than 4.70 gears in M210 (the case is not big enough). They made the Ultimate44 FDU so you can put lower gears in a 210. The case has added room and thicker(stronger) and the spline count is more. Other than that they are both the same. The internals from an M210 will fit into the Ultimate44.

There are a handful of people running around with gears lower than 4.70 in a m210 case now, I know of 3 with 15k plus miles and multiple Moab trips on 5.38s. The only person I've ever heard say that the gears wouldn't fit and would cause premature wear was the Dana engineer in some of bronbusters early videos. I plan on doing a gear swap shortly, revolution and nitro both offer multiple ratios for us 4.88-5.38.

From what I understand you need to do some "massaging" to the case to get them to fit. In last nights BB vid they touched on it a bit. I believe it was "It can be done, but they do not go right in".

This is why I say they don't fit. Most people do not understand the "slight massaging needed" part very good. And those people should not undertake that kind of work.

Damn that Quinn is a down to earth guy that loves what he is doing... Had an hour long convo with him this morning. Background: I have taught a few entry level gear design classes at the post secondary level.... Great conversation and let me assure you he KNOWS his stuff.

Already knew there was no way I wanted to go with Tibus.... those helical gears require very specific bearings to counter the axial thrust. I do not think Wolfgang accounts for that properly. Just my opinion and you are more than free to disagree..... I looked hard at the werewolf portals because they are straight cut gears and the bearing design is much simpler and does not have the axial loading to account for.

My other reason for moving toward 74 Weld is that they are WAY lighter than either of the other two... Rather than cast iron Quinn is using 7470 Aluminum for the housing.... This is huge advantage as speed increases.... Unsprung weight is something to be avoided because of momentum..... The more unsprung you have the harder the shocks have to work to change the direction (or suppress the momentum if you will).

I didn't even talk to Quinn about that issue... Yea after talking with him I put some money down....
