Why is it when you drop a bolt it always falls into that one place where you can't recover it?
Install ing A Pillar lights and I place one of the black accessory bolts on the cowling. It rolls off and drops through a hole and goes under the cowling. I remove the wiper and lift up the cowling, go to grab the bolt and it disappears into the Black Hole. Already have replacement pack of 25 coming from Amazon. Just hope I don't get a rattle that drives me nuts. If anyone needs one, I have extras.

Life lesson. To avoid the vicious act of gravity one learns to place all the hardware into a magnetic tray specifically designed to prevent loss of hardware, or at a minimum place the hardware in an old coffee can away from the vehicle being worked on. I know the urge to disregard and tempt gravity is great, but sooner or later, ( generally after decades of grief) one finally gets the message and respects the terror gravity can create when placing hardware in random areas of a vehicle. It’s equivalent to myself taking decades to realize trying to put long pants on over your shoes really saves no time and results in taking way longer and is massively frustrating. BTW, I am pretty confident the phrase “ son of a ….” was the result of hardware disappearing into or under a vehicle.

Trust me. When I install things that require working in close spaces under the hood, I usually tie fishing braid around the bolt just in case I drop it. This was one of those "Oh F-ck" moments.

I like it when you are working on the top end of an engine and a little voice in the back of your head says “stuff a rag in that oil return hole” and you think, “it’s just one bolt”…
And then it falls into the oil pan.

I lost a whole ratchet and socket in the engine bay of a Chrysler LHS once. Never did see it again. And yes, it was a 10mm.

I found a really nice soft grip Snap-On ratchet and socket under the hood of my F-250.

Unfortunately I found it when I noticed the weird dent on the passenger side of my hood poking upwards.

Luckily the tech at the dealership did it. Still have the ratchet tho! They gave it to me like a trophy.
