I would expect that if the tech found damage to other parts of the transmission internals they could make the case for a full replacement.

Those same dealerships will not want to get paid 9.6 hours for a job that takes significantly more time, and requires experience reassembling a transmission. I’ll let them decide whether they’d like to report “found transmission fluid with glitter”, or “grinding noise” to their warranty rep 😅
lol it doesn’t matter if they want to or not.
They send that transmission back to Ford, Ford inspects it, realizes it should’ve been repaired and not replaced, claim gets bounced and Ford charges the dealership for the whole repair. No dealership is going to risk that.

Dealerships still have to complete something called a cost cap. Unless the damage is very substantial, the cost cap will say repair. The only way around that, is if the parts aren’t available. Then dealerships can do a “next level” repair, which would be a whole transmission assembly.

First post.

Picked up my 2 door 2.3 Manual Big Bend on Nov -7th. Noticed the issue driving it off the lot. Contacted the dealer the next day. Took the service manager for a ride with 100kms on the odometer to hear the noise, He said "that is not right." They said they had to talk to Ford. Sat with the Service manager as he typed an email to "Ford Egineering in Dearborn". He said it was fine to drive and would contact me once he heard back from Ford.

2 weeks and no contact so I text my sales person for an update. He texts back they now need me to set up a service appointment at the dealership. We do that and I drop it off on Dec -7th, now with 931 kms on the odometer. I get a call back 2 hrs later and they say the transmission, clutch and throw out bearing need to be replaced. they give me 2 loaners and a rental over the course of 2 weeks. When picking up the rental on week 1 of 2 of them having the Bronco I inform them of the new TSB, (no work has been done on my Bronco as of yet as they are still waiting on clutch). They say the new transmission will fix the issue. I ask if it has the new parts and or if the TSB is being performed on the new transmission, they say they will have to talk to Ford.

Dec-23rd I get a call. Bronco is ready to be picked up. I pick it up. All seems well. Drive it 2-3 times since Christmas no issue. ( drive it in -30C during the blizzard) Drive it for the 4th time yesterday Dec-31 temps around +5C and the noise is back. (100 kms on the new set up)

Will be calling to bring it back in this week.

This is my 5th Ford since 2014 (2 Mustangs, a Focus ST , F-150 and the Bronco). Not sure I will be buying another Ford.

I heard the noise for the 1st time last night. Exactly as you guys have described. I was warming the vehicle up before leaving work and could hear it clearly from 10 ft outside the vehicle. I got in and did the light press on 6th gear thing and it stops instantly. If I depress the clutch it trails off as if rotating parts in the trans are slowing down. I could hear it in 1st and 2nd on light accel, then again at stops in neutral. The noise stopped about halfway home, and later that night it was still gone. Heard it again this AM, but only for a few minutes, warming up in driveway. Temps are not super cold...just above freezing. Not sure if it's worth worrying about the TSB yet, as I am not sure it is a permanent fix...might try a fluid change, w/a slight overfill. Book says 2.4L of motorcraft dcf fluid. Anybody tried this yet?

I have the fluid ready to go, just haven’t had time over the holidays. Hope to sometime this week. I’ll post pics of the fluid and the analysis when I get it.

What do you hope to learn from fluid analysis?

See what kind, and amount any metal particles are present, would help indicate what parts are wearing most and if they are present in large enough quantities to damage the rest of the transmission. If you go to blackstone’s website, they have a sample analysis.

I guess. I don't see any info coming from that that helps pinpoint the source of the noise. Interested to see results tho. Also interested to see how full these units were from the factory. Book says 2.5 qt. I will try to measure how much I get out of mine (never going to be exact, but should be close I would think)

Having gone through the Focus RS head gasket and timing chain cover sagas, I recommend everyone stand firm with their dealerships and make them replace the whole gearbox under warranty if they drop the fluid and note any sort of metal shavings at all. If they dropped the engine oil pan and found metal shavings, they wouldn’t bother messing around with replacing individual parts — they’d swap the whole damn short block.

Only when @Ford Motor Company starts to realize swapping entire transmissions every 10k miles is getting expensive will they actually put out a proper fix.
You’d have metal shavings in the transmission fluid anyways. Do you not think metal parts would wear over time?

Are you advocating for no transmission fluid at all then? What’s your point? “Trace amounts of metal will always be found in oil, so don’t worry about the 3oz’s of brass shaved off your synchros it’s actually good for the transmission!”

I’m not sure this was ever posted here but an owner in a FB group posted that they had the TSB performed and the sound went away.

They included these pictures of the 5 and 6th gear having “friction weld” burn marks on them. Oil was also visibly discolored with metal. I screen grabbed those pictures of the gears. Not my content so I can’t offer much more of an explanation. This owner reported the dealer replaced these gears as well.

Quotes for context — keep in mind we’re not talking about some hard to see glitter in the fluid. We’re talking about chunks of synchro material that could probably get caught in a coffee filter.

I mean yeah that’s different, especially if you can diagnose with your eyes that the metallic bits you see are directly from the synchros. I thought you were complaining at any metallic bits in the fluid which I’d say better not look at your gear fluid or magnets when you change those.

I imagine there is a built in magnet on the pan to filter magnetic material out of the fluid ? Which would catch anything solid made of steel, which the image looks to be steel where damage is.

Even if “there’s a magnet you’re fine” was a good enough excuse to just continue adding more metal shavings into a brand new gearbox when a known issue exists that Ford hasn’t fixed, you’re forgetting one key issue. Synchros are typically brass. Brass is not magnetic.
