lol it doesn’t matter if they want to or not.Those same dealerships will not want to get paid 9.6 hours for a job that takes significantly more time, and requires experience reassembling a transmission. I’ll let them decide whether they’d like to report “found transmission fluid with glitter”, or “grinding noise” to their warranty rep![]()
Dealerships still have to complete something called a cost cap. Unless the damage is very substantial, the cost cap will say repair. The only way around that, is if the parts aren’t available. I have the fluid ready to go, just haven’t had time over the holidays. Hope to sometime this week. I’ll post pics of the fluid and the analysis when I get it.I heard the noise for the 1st time last night. Exactly as you guys have described. I was warming the vehicle up before leaving work and could hear it clearly from 10 ft outside the vehicle. I got in and did the light press on 6th gear thing and it stops instantly. If I depress the clutch it trails off as if rotating parts in the trans are slowing down. I could hear it in 1st and 2nd on light accel, then again at stops in neutral. The noise stopped about halfway home, and later that night it was still gone. Heard it again this AM, but only for a few minutes, warming up in driveway. Temps are not super cold...just above freezing. Not sure if it's worth worrying about the TSB yet, as I am not sure it is a permanent fix...might try a fluid change, w/a slight overfill. Book says 2.4L of motorcraft dcf fluid. Anybody tried this yet?

See what kind, and amount any metal particles are present, would help indicate what parts are wearing most and if they are present in large enough quantities to damage the rest of the transmission. I guess. I don't see any info coming from that that helps pinpoint the source of the noise. Interested to see results tho. Also interested to see how full these units were from the factory. Book says 2.5 qt. Do you not think metal parts would wear over time?Having gone through the Focus RS head gasket and timing chain cover sagas, I recommend everyone stand firm with their dealerships and make them replace the whole gearbox under warranty if they drop the fluid and note any sort of metal shavings at all. If they dropped the engine oil pan and found metal shavings, they wouldn’t bother messing around with replacing individual parts — they’d swap the whole damn short block.
Only when @Ford Motor Company starts to realize swapping entire transmissions every 10k miles is getting expensive will they actually put out a proper fix.

I’m not sure this was ever posted here but an owner in a FB group posted that they had the TSB performed and the sound went away.
They included these pictures of the 5 and 6th gear having “friction weld” burn marks on them. Oil was also visibly discolored with metal. I screen grabbed those pictures of the gears. Not my content so I can’t offer much more of an explanation. This owner reported the dealer replaced these gears as well.

I mean yeah that’s different, especially if you can diagnose with your eyes that the metallic bits you see are directly from the synchros. Even if “there’s a magnet you’re fine” was a good enough excuse to just continue adding more metal shavings into a brand new gearbox when a known issue exists that Ford hasn’t fixed, you’re forgetting one key issue.
