Let me start this by saying that I absolutely love my (new to me) Bronco. I've only had trucks, I've never had a Jeep or a previous Bronco (although a few of my buddies did) so I never really experienced the doors off / top back freedom that comes with these. I took my doors off for the first time this past weekend and couldn't get enough driving in. The weather was perfect and I'm smiling like a fool everywhere I went.

That said, I got a weird warning once the doors came off and couldn't find anything on here about it so wanted to post about it. The entire time my doors were off I would get a 'right rear door ajar' warning. I tried looking for a sensor or some type of plunger that would indicate when the door was open but obviously its not like a typical car. All the pins looked fine, although I can't imagine that's where the issue lies but couldn't figure out where else to check.

I met another Bronco owner from this forum over the weekend and he mentioned that there have been a few sensor issues with these but hadn't heard of this one either. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of it?

Well, I really like the 'similar threads' feature in this forum. It did a MUCH better job at searching for related topics than I did with my search.

I found this one https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/warnings-when-starting.45851/ and a few others. seems like double checking battery connections is suggestions. Apologies on the multiple posts. I'll be following these to see if any of the suggestions for OTA updates come through.

I am getting the same warning for the same door. Didn’t happen the first time I took the doors off, but the last two times I did it happens (on every startup). It at least goes away when the doors are back on.

Hi there. Can you send us a DM with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into this for you.

I get the “door ajar” message every time I start up since the doors came off yesterday. Gonna go back through the threads and do the tweaks I find. Never complains about the passenger door, though.

Happened to me yesterday. I've taken my doors off many times. Yesterday morning, I took off the front driver and passenger doors and got two errors. One message stated the Passenger door was ajar, although the small red icon that also displayed shows what appears to be a static image of the driver door ajar. The Air bag light also came on, which is the concerning one of course. For which door\seat is the air bag light on? idk.

Later, I only put the passenger door back on and left the driver side off. The errors went away. I took the passenger door off this morning and, so far, no errors.

I finally got around to having the dealership look at this this week and Ford told them it will involve following the wiring from the connector down until they can find a problem. they will have to take out the interior carpet and panels And I should expect it to take 3-5 days. So I’m dropping it off Monday.

Awesome post from Bmadda!

I just got my Bronco back from Ford and they said some of my contacts had corrosion on them which was causing the issue. Seems awfully fast for a 10 month old Bronco (I've had it for 3) but they said they tested it a few times and the issue was cleared up. I'll be doing a confirmation in the next few weeks when the weather starts cooling off a bit.

I just picked mine up from the dealership. They said that it was a failure in the door sensor module. Should be an easy fix once the part gets in next week.

Same issue, with my front passenger door. It's also showing the door is ajar, and I'm getting a seat belt warning for the front passenger seat despite it being empty and uploaded (zero cargo or weight on the passenger seat)

You Bronco thinks the door is on - had my rear driver door do this when I pulled them off. There is a bar that makes contact between 2 of the pins in the door plugin to let the control modules know that the doors are off. When this fails to make contact, it thinks the door is on even though it's in the bag and not anywhere nearby. This is an easy fix!

Items needed:
  • Small flathead screw driver or small pocket knife
  • Bit of sandpaper folded in half (grit side facing out)
  • Glasses (if you're vision sucks like mine)
Steps:
  • Open the door cover where the door plugs into the vehicle
  • Use the screwdriver or blade to push the little tab away from the 2 pins
  • Clean with the sandpaper
  • Use the screwdriver to make sure the bar is well pressed onto the pins

Here's a diagram (stolen off the internet) with the bit in question circled.
