I have traditionally ended up losing the little plastic screws or breaking clips/tabs on engine covers. Strictly speaking, I never need to see under my hood until I do and when I do, I don’t really wanna mess with unnecessary steps. So not a big deal to me. But your mileage may vary!

Since you can actually see them, it would be nice if the Valve Covers said "Power by Ford" like the old 302's did!

This engine compartment is way cleaner than my '15 Superduty was. Practically every cubic inch of that engine bay was taken up by something. Replacing the passenger side battery (50+lb) was the worst because it was at the back of the engine bay giving you 2 choices:
  1. Lift a 50lb battery head high
  2. Use a step ladder and risk a back injury due to having to bend forward so far

Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of plastic covers under the hood either. Just makes more work/dirt/places for that bolt to fall into.

I take the cover off in the first place, I want to see the engine in all its glory, not a piece of heat trapping plastic

I was reading a review of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and cannot help but wonder why the Bronco cannot get an engine compartment that appears better finished?

Couple of wild guesses:
  • Grand Cherokee weighs in at about 5,000 lbs, hundreds of which are focused on the luxury of insulating the occupants from the rigors of being on the same planet as other motorists (see Land Rover as an example of how coddled people drive. Almost universally like self-absorbed jerks)
  • The only person working on that Jeep will be a dealership mechanic
  • Field repairs dictate any engine covers on Bronco would be a total waste of time and probably thrown away/broken
  • Because you should be embarrassed at having your friends hear the 2.3 or 2.7 in operation, they shouldn't also be forced to look at the source of the abysmal racket

Less is better, since 1965 lol.

Look at all that fancy, unnecessary stuff! You kids and your blasted fancy new toys. I mean, 12 volts, negative ground and everything! You probably even have an oil filter on that space ship!

Well, suppose I did swap over to negative ground and added crank case ventilation since it doesn't have oil filtration or any filters (canister is still there, but disconnected and ports plugged on the block) 1940's engine tech is where it's at, the "Mileage Maker" 216/235's would routinely make it over 50,000 miles between rebuilds!

My daughter's Prius has a "dressed" engine bay. I hate it. It takes an hour to remove all the plastic crap just to change the spark plugs.

Yea, I expected as much. "Buy a Grand Cherokee..." (really?, and did you come up with that all on your own?), and like comments are fine. I'd never post anything if I worried about useless responses. Luckily, there are many awesome people here that actually are very helpful and more informed than myself. And no, I am not a mechanic. All good if you like to work on cars or do that for a living, I'd simply rather not.

Back on topic - Engineering and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive. I found the new Jeep to be particularly clean, hence the comparison pics. I would argue that properly routing and managing the various wires, lines and componentry into something that is aesthetically pleasing is a plus.
The new Jeep also costs far more than the Bronco. The intended buyers are much more concerned with the esthetics than the intended buyers of Broncos.

Imagine wanting to having to remove a bunch of clips shields to do anything under the hood.

Tell me you don’t work on your own vehicle without actually telling me you don’t work on your own vehicle.

It's just gonna get filthy with or without a cover. Took my Jeep one off on day 1. Out of sight, out of mind.

I have a Bachelor’s in Engineering and a Masters in Archtecture, with experience in both, which is I think a pretty good form vs. function background. You are right that “how it works” and “how it looks” are not exclusive in the world of engineering. But I’ll take function when it comes to what’s under the hood any day. The exterior of the Bronco, I think we’d all agree, far outshines the Cherokee in aesthetics. As for the “how it works” engineering aspect, read below:

Consumer Reports reported a lot of bad things about the Cherokee. Overall, the Cherokee had a reliability rating of just 2 out of 5. The actual percentage score that Consumer Reports gave the Cherokee was even lower. The Cherokee’s reliability score was a mere 14%.

“This was the second-worst reliability score out of the 27 similar SUVs that Consumer Reports graded. The Cherokee’s reliability score was just 1% higher than the lowest reliability score, which went to the VW Tiguan.“
