Have you considered a set of power steps? My wife had a similar issue and the power steps extend lower than the Heritage or Braptor & she loves them.

FYI - the Braptor steps are lower than the OEM Heritage steps so, while they may be stronger, they will be more likely to be problematic off-roading. YMMV

we did a measure up on a raptor vs our heritage ltd and believe this would be the best compromise for us. i am not totally ruling out aftermarket sliders with steps. i need to see some in person.

thx for the help

Those pictures are the AMP steps. Great design with the way the step comes out and tucks back in nicely, but NOT bash-friendly.
Rock Slide Engineering makes some that hinge down at an angle and are much more robust. Made for taking some abuse.
Some say they are hardcore, some say the robust nature is relative. Don't know for sure, as I don't own any.
A friend of mine has some of the Rock Slide ones and he isn't gentle on them, has had no issues.
They also make a supplemental bash/skid guard to further beef them up as well.
IF we ever go the powered step route, the Rock Slide Engineering ones are what we are going to go with.
